I found this interesting Example: 1. That fever drives the migration of heat-shock proteins toward the sites of infection has been known for a while. 2. fever drives the migration of heat-shock proteins toward the sites of infection has been known for a while.
Many people might say that sentence number 2 is correct. But in fact, 1 is the correct sentence.
See, for a clause to act a subject of another clause, that clause needs to be a Dependent Clause. In Sent. 1, "that" does the work of making "fever drives ..... infection" a dependent clause.
While in 2, the absence of "that" makes the "fever drives ..... infection" a Independent Clause, therefore the verb "is" doesn't have any proper subject in 2.

Yes, you are right. 2 is not correct because it has two verbs. fever drives the migration of heat-shock proteins toward the sites of infection has been known for a while.
On the other hand verb ‘drives’ becomes a part of noun clause acting as the subject by placing of THAT. The verb is always SINGULAR in these cases.
