What is the proper cold emailing procedure when reaching out to alumni? One of the things I'm struggling with is keeping the email conversation alive. It seems that the only way the thread is continuing is through my questions. At what point can you add them on LinkedIn?

Are you an applicant or current student? What are you looking to gain from the connection? LinkedIn is fine to utilize early on in a relationship assuming you had a nice of ideas / questions. Is the person local? Invite them for a drink near their office one day. Keep in mind this may only work in some situations since everyone is busy. That said, it's a nice way to develop the relationship. Try to see how you can help them, if at all possible or at least look into what they do and ask inquisitive questions to show you are genuinely interested in their work.
