Does anyone know much about the Columbia Merit Fellowships? When do they announce the awards (is it at the time of admission?) and typically how large are they?

Below is my unfortunate chain of events. The dates may be slightly off because I'm recalling purely from memory.

Applied 10/3 (Early Decision)
Dinged around 10/20

I e-mailed admissions a few days after my ding to ask for application feedback. I would have loved to hear back anything, even something as blunt as "Essays sucked," or "GMAT BAD," you know... help the brother out. Instead, I received an e-mail informing me admissions did not have the capacity to provide feedback for everyone. It's unfortunate, but that's life and I have to move on.

Anyway, congrats to everyone that's already in! You all should be very proud!

The deadline is end of January and last year most awards were announced in Feb/Mar time-frame. That being said, I have spoken to somebody who was accepted Regular Decision this year and he received scholarship money with his admit letter. So I'm not 100% sure how the process is working this year. So far he is the only individual I have spoken to that received money but that makes sense because there really is no benefit for the school to offer money to ED applicants. We are already committed to the school regardless.

I hope that we as early birds didn't overcommit and deserve some $. Not sure about merits, but we will participate in need-based carve-up, as we all need $.

For what is worth:

Apply 11/25
Last Recommendation: 12/2
Dinged: 12/19

I always thought your status changes to under review first. Is my application that bad?

Just submitted 12/19/2012.

Here's to a long month and a half... I'm thinking interview invites won't go out until February?

Wow. Sorry to hear this. I'm stunned at how quick the ding was. I submitted my app on 11/30, so i guess that means i will get a ding or interview e-mail fairly shortly. Ugh.

Bad luck to the dings - hopefully other apps work out better.

Does anyone know how much interview counts? I.e. once you're interviewed, is it a case of if the interviewer gives good feedback you're in, and if not you're not? Or is there still more scrutiny of the submitted application also afterwards?

Interviews are taken into account obviously but for columbia it's not as critical as it is with hbs/stanford. Plenty of people have had mediocre interviews but gotten in, and the reverse is also true. Do your best of course, but don't go nuts if you don't think your answers were perfect. The adcom will assess the entire application again after the interview report is submitted.

I see - thank for the insight. Interview was incredibly informal; beers at the pub but I think it went well...just wondering how much stock to place on that. Appreciate the response.

Does it take longer for people who get dinged without interviews, to hear back, as compared to those who do get invites?

I haven't submitted my app yet but i did attend a CBS info session in Mumbai and when someone asked a basic time frame in which an application and they said around 8 weeks turn around max unless a lot of applications come in at the same time, as in just after ED deadline or Merit Fellowship deadline.
