(A) those of other nuts and seeds, chestnuts have calories that are relatively low, containing little fat, but they are - Incorrect. Comparison is between calories and chestnuts.

(B) other nuts and seeds, chestnuts, containing little fat, are relatively low in calories, but are - Correct

(C) other nuts and seeds, the calories in chestnuts are relatively low, and they contain little fat, but they are - Incorrect. Nuts and seeds are compared with calories.

(D) the calories in other nuts and seeds, in chestnuts the calories are relatively low and contain little fat, but are - Incorrect. Illogical. Calories are not rich sources of minerals. Also the sentence is not written in the most efficient way.

(E) in other nuts and seeds, chestnuts contain little fat, are relatively low in calories, but - Incorrect. Awkward.

Straight B.

(A) those of other nuts and seeds, chestnuts have calories that are relatively low, containing little fat, but they are [those of...., chestnuts. Comparison error]

(B) other nuts and seeds, chestnuts, containing little fat, are relatively low in calories, but are [other nuts..., chestnuts...are relatively...but are... Right comparison and maintains parallelism]

(C) other nuts and seeds, the calories in chestnuts are relatively low, and they contain little fat, but they are [other nuts...., the calories. Comparison error]

(D) the calories in other nuts and seeds, in chestnuts the calories are relatively low and contain little fat, but are [the calories...., in chestnuts. Comparison error]

How can B be right?

Conjunction but joins two independent clauses. Second clause does not have a subject

only B have correct comparison of nuts with nuts

if you break sentence further
Chestnuts are relatively low in calories
Chestnuts are rich sources of minerals,vitamins and .........

Compared with other nuts and seeds, chestnuts, containing little fat, are relatively low in calories, but are rich sources of minerals, vitamins and phytonutrients that immensely benefit health.

Is option b correct because , after according to rule, but followed by comma should be a independent clause and here it is not.

Completely accept your views , but for GMAT SC our approach must to select the best among the rest , here option (B) stands out among the rest and is hence correct...

Also consider the idiomatic form Compared with X , Y ( To emphasize differences )

Hence, (B) is best among the rest of the options and is our answer...

Your query has already been answered by Abhishek above. Also note that I have not come across any official question that is eliminated only because of punctuation error.

( However, another way to look at option B is that there are three verbs in a list. It is optional to use comma before "and" when there are more than two items. In that respect, comma is alright)
