Comparing OG GMAT ques difficulty with real GMAT questions?

Question

Hey guys,
I have been solving questions in OG GMAT 13th edition and I am finding them way easier than the questions in GMATPrep.
As the questions in OG are past GMAT questions, how much would you rate them on the difficulty level (like 600,650,700 or any range would suffice)? :-D

Based on my analysis, the OG 13th edition difficulty breaks down like this:

Problems Composite Score Level
First Third 500
Middle Third 550
Final Third 650

These divisions apply to each problem type in the OG. A 650 composite score means that a student is getting half of the problems at that level correct. So, if you are acing the final third of the problems for each problem type within official timing limits, then you are actually performing at a level higher than 650.

As per now, I solved 0-100 numbered questions(Problem Solving) yesterday, I had 95% accuracy at the problems and solved each question in around 50-90 seconds. So, what do you think? :-D

Nice work on those OG problems. You are acing the easy problems and some of moderate difficulty problems. The problems you completed are about at a 520 level, on average. This may explain why the GMAT Prep CATs feel so much more difficult: because they are. It is really important to master the easier problems, but tackling the moderate and difficult problems is crucial as well.

Is this part true? For 700 level questions on this forum, I usually see around 50% (averaged) accuracy by gmatclub forum members. Does this mean that the average gmatclub member is around a 700 level?

So just to clarify a generalization: Answering x level questions right 50% of the time typically means your score is close to x?

It was probably not meant to be taken quite so literally. The GMAT is not a perfect computer adaptive test. It doesn't have a very large number of "difficulty levels", and the characteristics of each question are derived from experiments involving other people.

Hi ggurface,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complex than most people realize. As such, you shouldn't be spending your time trying to figure it out. In that same way, it's not practical to try to compare 'sets' of practice problems (especially from a book) to an equivalent score on the Official GMAT.

As far as getting a realistic assessment of your abilities, you should be taking FULL-LENGTH CATs, under realistic conditions, at regular intervals during your studies. How have you been scoring on your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
