Thank you, appreciated.

Without names I or anybody else, cannot compare them.

You should not be shy and post names of schools, so people can help you to decide. ;)

I am not being shy, I'm being cautious. With the low number of PhD admissions every year, school information would make me personally identifiable, which is undesirable in the situation.

Sorry if I wasn't very clear about my question. I'm not really seeking comments on the schools. I have done a fair bit of research and have a good understanding of each of the two schools.

What I am asking is whether it's (a) legal, and (b) acceptable to enrol in 2 PhDs concurrently (closely related but different subdisciplines of management).

Milan Bocconi to SFI Lugano, will still be no. (1h drive)
Again, apologies if I wasn't very clear. I am confident that the logistics are not an issue. As mentioned previously, I am asking whether it's (a) legal, and (b) acceptable to enrol in 2 PhDs concurrently (closely related but different subdisciplines of management).

Now, most important part: you cannot attend two PhD programs at the same time, even if they were in same city, let alone two different countries.
Any references for this information would be useful.
As for same city v different countries, actually my understanding is that sometimes the universities require that the candidate is not enrolled in any other program in the country. So, perhaps different countries is a bit more feasible than same city.

Hi corpguy

I can see you are adamant in notion that is feasible.

Besides seriously underestimating amount of work that you need to invest in studying, attending lectures (as least for 5 year program), you neglect to realize that you will be employed at faculty as either TA/RA, whatever is on your offer's stated.

Meaning, you will need to be physically present at faculty when they want you, not when you want to be there.

You will be assistant to professor, that's not freelance working from home option.

Sooner or later you will start to give lectures to undergraduates.

Your understanding is wrong, outside employment is forbidden, not outside enrollment at another program necessary, which is the same for the reasons described above.

People do two PhD degrees at different times in their life, usually in different fields.

Nobody does two PhD's at the same time in the same field, sub-discipline or not.

I doubt it can be legal, but I will not investigate that, I leave that to you. ;)

And I am certain it is not feasible anyway.

Good Luck with deciding which one is the right one for you

Corpguy, I hope you know about PhD program. There are few things like "Course Work", "Employment Agreement", etc which can bring legal problems for you. Not just Europe or USA, you can't do this even in our beloved India?.
These things are mentioned even on their brochure, also this is must when you submit your research proposal. If you haven't, please Google, even if you join one program, such research will help you.

I received a few admissions offers for PhD in management. I have rejected all but two (so I have 2 in hand offers).

It's a tough choice: one school has better location and stipend, the other has a better ranking and shorter program.

I am considering whether it might make sense to enrol in both, rather than choose. In a sense they are complementary.

In terms of coursework, there are synergies - both have similar required curriculum, so there won't be a ton of extra work that I'd need to put in.

In terms of the actual research output, based on my ongoing work, I feel confident that I should be able to produce 2 separate, different and competent pieces of PhD theses.

Any thoughts/perspectives on this idea?
Is this legal? Esp. in terms of immigration rules.
Any thoughts on what the universities may say about this? (I don't want to bring this up with either, if it means I would piss them off and get my offer rescinded)
Possibly relevant details:

Both are in Europe (one in EU), and I am a third country national.
The funding at both is via so-called assistantship "jobs" (which are taxed as such), not true stipends.
The locations of the universities/countries are such that it is practical, at least financially to attend both for the coursework...even if that means round trips every week.

I think it is outright illegal and also impractical (even if it was legal). Devoting time on the coursework, helping with the RA/TA work, exploring your research topic and writing 3-4 paper may not sound too much at present, but you will realize the enormity when the rubber hits the road! I'd say that you take admission to that one university where your research interests are best aligned, and stay in touch with those in the second one. Perhaps, you can write a paper in collaboration with the faculty in the second university. Please be advised against biting way more than you can chew.
