I have a question with regard to the second point you made. Is it okay to pay the deposit and then not go to that school? I mean, other than losing the money, is there any other implication?

My opinion is yes. It happens all the time. It's only unethical to do this if its an early decision application where the school says it's binding and you'll withdraw your applications to other schools. If you were on your top choice school's WL but accepted by no.2, it would be dangerous not to put a deposit down on no.2 seeing how the WL isn't guaranteed. But if a spot opens up? I don't think anyone can blame you. Again, that's why schools have waitlists.

i think ppl get wait-listed because johnson thinks that these applicants are not good enough. i don't think they are still in the process of reading round 1 applications. the members of the adcom are welled organized. one application needs 20 mins (according to Christine's interview), with 5 people working, 7 hours a day, they can review over 100 applications a day. i think the official number of round 1 applications is a little over 500. they can easily get that done within a week or two. also, i have seen invitation went out to applicant who submitted on the deadline. i know they separate the applications by regions, but within the same region, i assume that it is first come first serve. if they already get to the applications that submitted on the deadline, i am pretty sure they are done with reviewing by now. anyway, good luck to everyone, especially the ones like me who still hoping for an interview. looks like we need a lot of luck... spent too much time on refreshing the page, gotta go back to work

Thanks all! It was Christine. Kind of crazy since I could picture her face from the photo on the website. I'm in Germany - so she did say that she wanted to call before it was too late. But I'm a US applicant - so know I'm always in the North American pile.
