ESSAY QUESTION:
The following appeared in The Homebuilder magazine, a local publication with a focus on construction and sale of real-estate properties:
“According to the most recent survey of our readers, nearly 70% of the respondents indicated that they are planning to build or purchase a new home over the next 2 years. These results indicate that the growth in the construction industry is likely to accelerate in the near future. Therefore, this industry continues to offer lucrative opportunities for investment.”
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.
YOUR RESPONSE:
In the argument, the author argues that it is now profitable to invest into construction industry because in most of recent surveys recently, most of responsdents show their intention of their plan to build or buy a new home in the next two years. However, the argument is not logically convincing due to the following reasons.
First, the author assumes that the readers of The Homebuilder magazine can represent for everybody. What if the Homebuilder magazine is not a famous magazine in construction and sale of real-estate properties and its readers is a very small proportion of whole population. Therefore 70% of the surveyed respondents in the magazine is not enough to reflect accurately the wish to build or purchase a new home.
Second, the argument also based on the assumption that high demand will eventually lead to lucrative opportunities for investment. However there is no such correlation between two factors. Eventhough when there is actually a need to build or purchase a new home, it does not prove that there is a good environment for investors to put their money into. If the administration procedure of the coutry is so complicated that it is extremely difficult to get an approval for construction, it also hinders the acceleration of construction in the area. The author also does not mention about other factors that influence the profit of investment into construction. If the cost of labor and material is unreasonably high, investment into construction will not be profitable as well.
To conclude, the argument is not unsound. To strengthen the argument, the author need to give evidence that the opinions of respondents in the magazine can fully represent the people's opinions. Moreover, it is necessary to prove that other than high demand, other conditions also favor the investment into construction such as low labor and material cost, simple procedure to get approval from authority.
