Could anyone help me to decode the structure of the below mentioned sentence -

In order to conserve the energy and heat they need to spend the entire winter sitting motionless over incubating eggs,
male emperor penguins huddle over the nests in groups,
thereby reducing the rate at which they burn energy so that it is 25 percent lower than it would be for isolated birds.

Here I go:

In order to conserve the energy and heat they need to spend the entire winter sitting motionless over incubating eggs, --> Modifier. We have they. It must refer to a plural noun after the comma.

male emperor penguins huddle over the nests in groups --> Okay, we have a plural noun here. Verb here is huddle. Penguins HUDDLE over something.

Next is the effect of huddling over the next.

thereby reducing the rate at which they burn energy so that it is 25 percent lower than it would be for isolated birds.

Let's break it down further:

thereby reducing the rate at which they burn energy

The purpose of reducing this rate is :

so that it is 25 percent lower than it would be for isolated birds.

abhimahna thanks for your reply, but how to break it into clauses; Adverbial Phrases; and Adjectival phrases?
The complete sentence is -

In order to conserve the energy and heat they need to spend the entire winter sitting motionless over incubating eggs, male emperor penguins huddle over the nests in groups, thereby reducing the rate at which they burn energy so that it is 25 percent lower than it would be for isolated birds.

Hi DAakash7, frankly it is an overkill to do this exercise for every sentence and every option.

However, for academic purposes only, here goes:

i) In order to conserve the energy and heat they need to spend the entire winter sitting motionless over incubating eggs: Prepositional phrase (here, it is adverbial). This prepositional phrase has a relative clause embedded as well: they need. All relative clause are Adjectivial.

ii) male emperor penguins huddle over the nests in groups - Main clause (Independent clause)

iii) thereby reducing the rate at which they burn energy so that it is 25 percent lower than it would be for isolated birds - Participial Phrase
