Hi,
this is the essay I wrote following that prompt:
“Corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business opportunities or a new location.
Even in the recent recession, Helios’s unemployment rate was lower than the regional average. It is the industrial
center of the region, and historically it has provided more than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs. In
addition, Helios is attempting to expand its economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and
development of innovative technologies.”
Could you tell me what you thing about it?
The author of the article is making the case of the city of Helios, a seemingly beacon of growth and employment. However, his argument is substianlly flawed. It fails to present appropriate explanations behind Helios’ economical health, use vague language and does not take into account possible structural economical shifts.
First of all, the article presents Helios as a city with low unemployment, despite the recent recession. Nonetheless, there might be a lot of retired people in Helios, thus workers find jobs more easily for a position that in big cities where every job are subject to fierce competition. Companies who would settle in Helios might face a shortage of workers, hindering their growth.
Moreover, the journalist makes vague comparisons. He says that the unemployment rate is lower than the regional average but we do know by how much and also what is the regional average compared to the national one. If the unemployment rate is only 0,5% lower than the regional average, which is itself higher by 3% than nationwide, then Helios is actually worse off than most of the country. In addition, it is stated that the city provided more tha its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs but it might be that since Helios is a little town, it amount to 1% of the region’s population and provided 3% of the manufacturing jobs.
Finally, as the industrial center of the region, Helios might be too reliant on industry. If the consuptiom were to shift to services, or the companies were to outsource their production, Helios might take a blow from which it would not recover.
The argument is flawed because it does not give a full picture of the economic sector and does not present relevant comparisons. If we were given the national unemployment rate or the cost of labor elsewhere, we would be better equipped to assess the appeal of Helios to businesses.
Thank you
