Fact 1: In Country X, rate of skin cancer is the highest.
Fact 2: The population of Country X buys more sun block than the population of any other country in the world.

A) Ultraviolet radiation in Country X is stronger than anywhere else in the world. - Correct. Since uv radiation in country X is stronger than other parts of the world, people buy more sun blockers. But, the stronger radiation has more probability of causing skin cancer.

B) Awareness of the potential damage of exposure to the sun in Country X is high. - Incorrect. Awareness should have reduced the rate of skin cancer in Country X. But Country X has the highest rate of skin cancer.

C) Country X is the world leader in sunglasses and hat sales. - Incorrect. Irrelevant

D) The rate of cancer cases other than skin cancer in Country X is lower than the rate of skin cancer. - Incorrect. Out of context

Hi

I do not see option "A" as clear winner here.

It states that radiation of UV in country X is higher that in anywhere else in the world, which means more people will suffer from the skin cancer, but it do not prove that the population in country X should buy more sun blocks unless they are aware of potential damage of the UV rays. The awareness is talked about in option "B".

UV rays cause cancer. Rates of different kinds of cancer is given that's caused by UV rays.
People in country X purchase more sun block than any other country in the world.

Sunblock is supposed to protect people from UV rays i.e. protect them from cancer caused by UV Rays.
But people there buy more sun block than anyone else, yet get diagnosed with cancer.

That's the paradox.

The only thing that can explain this is, if UV rays in Country X are stronger than anywhere else in the world.

I do not see option "A" as clear winner here.

But I don't understand how an awareness can solve the paradox in this context?

Answer: A

Hi,
People buy more sun blockers because uv radiation in country X is stronger than other parts of the world. Still country X has highest rate of skin cancer. So, the paradox here is that sun blockers are not very effective against strong ultraviolet rays. But option A states that Ultraviolet radiation in Country X is stronger than anywhere else in the world. This gives us a reason why people buy more sunblocks. But we don't have a reason to understand why people get most effected. despite buying more sunblocks.
The reasons could be- 1. sunblocks are not very effective against stronger radiation.
