I see how E is also good. True that E is a stronger contradiction but as soon as I saw C, my mind just stop there. Both C and E are definitely valid though. It is actually impossible to accept C as a valid answer.

It is E. C states proportion of farmers in the US labour force. But we are talking about proportion of general population.

 indeed, you are right. Labor force vs general population... tricky choice of words...

WHy not D?
D states there was a decrease in % of farmers while the passage states there was a low rate of increase? So doesnt D contradict.
Further E states the proportion of farmers grew as a percentage of general population. How does this contradict. Could someone Please explain.

The question is asking for a statement that contradicts... D does not as you said :)

if you are able to notice the words "directly contradicts" than E immediately pops out.

E.
What is the relationship between farmers and labour force is not given per se.
hence it can't be assumed that decline/ascent in proportional representation in labour force is in contradiction.

Hey Frank,

It says there has been a decrease in the % of farmers in the labor force, and we are talking about a % decrease of farmers in relation to the population as a whole not a sect of it, which is what the labor force is.
