Hi Redfield,

Based on what you described here....

struggle-with-how-to-start-on-problems-210497.html#p1620855

...your Official Score seems to be far more 'in line' with how you were performing back in December.

1) Were you away from your studies for that stretch of time during January?
2) The CAT scores that you described in this post are higher than the ones you listed previously. Were these CATs that you had used before?

Traveling to the wrong Testing Center and then having to rush to the 'correct' one could have absolutely impacted your performance on Test Day - the added stress of dealing with that situation and all of the adrenaline/energy you would have burned through to solve that immediate problem likely would have hurt your energy levels for the rest of the day. This is meant to say that you might very well have scored 700+ on Test Day. The fact that you 'reverted' back to your December 'performances' though hints that you're not really comfortable with all of the various Quant ideas, so spending some time retraining to face that section would likely be helpful.

Hi Rich,

Absolutely, that's what I was saying in that I've certainly felt like I was close to "getting it" for awhile now (so either I'm mistaken or I just didn't make much progress). I spent that time going over 2 MGMAT books (number properties, geometry), a few tutor sessions, and a whole lot of practice with the official guide, official quant review.

In regards to the CATs those are tests I've taken in only the last few weeks and were not repeated. I scored a 710 and 720 on MGMAT (granted the scoring algorithm is different) and a 710 and 730 in GMAT Exam pack 1. I was consistently getting around 45Q and 45V and was fairly happy with the quant score consistency.

I 100% know more math now at my official 39Q than I did in my previous 650 39Q from December yet that increase doesn't seem to have translated to an increased score. It's certainly possible in a panic I reverted to my previous math style and as you suggest that would indicate I do not truly grasp the fundamentals like I believe I do.

My question to the forum is, knowing it's a case by case basis and that this is all personal opinion, will 3 weeks likely be enough time to jump a handful of points in quant and should I just lay on the practice work or might that dip down to Q39 indicate maybe I don't know the basics like I thought I did and should consider upping my study materials/tutoring (currently OG, GMAT Pill (more of a benefit for verbal), Official Quant Review, MGMAT number properties and geometry)? Or how do you think I should approach this?
If I had been getting Q44s consistently on the GMATPreps, I'd definitely back myself to get more than Q39 on the actual exam. That said, even a Q44 doesn't indicate a strong grasp of the fundamental concepts. Getting a 44 on quant is like getting a 590 on the exam. Better than average, but not really good.

It's not essential that you get a great score on quant though, because your verbal scores are extremely good. All I'm saying is that there are a lot of ways to "up" study material, but you might actually need to work on the basics first if you want to increase your confidence in quant.

Those GMATPrep scores look really good. Working on the quant could still help you if your verbal doesn't go as well as expected.

I absolutely agree with you that a 44 is unspectacular and I also think we can agree (and perhaps you were just too nice to say) that by the standards of this forum, that's simply not a good quant score. I have just struggled so much to make headway with the math section for some reason despite at one point being really good at math.

Being a native speaker I have an immense advantage for the verbal and I definitely feel like I'm wasting it by not getting a better quant score. It seems a return to the basics is the common opinion so far and I'm determined to do what is needed.

Hi Redfield,

I have a few additional questions about those 4 recent CATs that you took...

When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?

1. I always took IR, only took Essay in the final 2. Exam stamina was not an issue to my knowledge
2. I took a couple at home and a couple at an office, the testing environment felt a little foreign but I wouldn't say it messed with me at all
3. Not all of them but at least 3 of the last 5 I did, the others were close
4. Initially (like early January) I would actually pause exams just to fully work through a problem so that I could understand it better but as for the cited CATs no I did not take longer breaks or pauses or anything. I'm fully aware that it's recommended to simulate the test day as much as possible (I even wore the same clothing). That makes the fact I visited the wrong test center 3 days ago that much worse because I technically went to the wrong center twice...

It's not about whether a Q44 is good. The total you got with the Q45/V45 you mentioned is what really matters. It's just that banking on an exceptional verbal score (V45 = 99 percentile) is risky. A better score in quant could help you offset at least some of the possible variability in your quant score.

Bottom line: I think you can get a 700+ in 3 weeks (you did mean to say "I did NOT take longer breaks", right :)).

I agree completely that the total is what really matters but I also have a very non-quant focused background and the higher quant score not only would help mitigate the risk of banking on a high verbal score but also help in admissions to show I can in fact handle quant (which I've yet to prove honestly).

AjiteshArun
(you did mean to say "I did NOT take longer breaks", right :)).

Haha edited, take it easy on me it's midnight here and I was just beaten by the gmat!
