Re: Last month I visited with our econometrics instructor to discuss the [#permalink]
1.The economics department will offer a course in spatial econometrics if more than 14 students sign up for the course.
A: X>14, X=15 is in the range

2. The economics department cannot spend more than $800 on Eviews software unless more than 10 students sign up for the course.
A: First, there are at least 15 students required for the course. Secondly the budget allotted is of $1000 regardless the number of students.

3. The graduate coordinator believes that the economics department will be able to open the course.
As said by the coordinator " In fact, there is a good chance that we will have more than 15 students in the course by the deadline" he believes it will be possible.

Re: Last month I visited with our econometrics instructor to discuss the [#permalink]
Q1) The economics department will offer a course in spatial econometrics if more than 14 students sign up for the course.
Yes
Explanation: The department chair mentioned that the dean of the college will open the course if at least 15 students sign up by February 1. As of the latest update, 12 students have already signed up, and they need 3 more students to meet the requirement, which is achievable before the deadline.

Q2) The economics department cannot spend more than $800 on Eviews software unless more than 10 students sign up for the course.
No
Explanation: The budget for the Eviews software is flexible, but it should not exceed $1,000 under any circumstances, regardless of the number of students signing up. There is no specific condition related to the number of students in the budget constraint mentioned in the emails.

Q3) The graduate coordinator believes that the economics department will be able to open the course.
Yes
Explanation: The graduate coordinator stated that they do not believe they should offer any incentives for students to sign up, as they are likely to have 3 more students register, and there is still one more week until the deadline. The coordinator seems confident that they will meet the required number of students for the course to be opened.

Re: Last month I visited with our econometrics instructor to discuss the [#permalink]
A. The economics department will offer a course in spatial econometrics if more than 14 students sign up for the course.

E-mail #1 highlights

'The dean of the college said that he will not open the course unless at least 15 students sign up by February 1.' --- necessary condition

However, for Sufficiency, other factors viz. budget, faculty etc may or may not be considered (Not known using the stimulus)

Hence, Cannot be conclusively determined that 'The economics department will offer a course in spatial econometrics if more than 14 students sign up for the course.'

NO is the correct answer

B. The economics department cannot spend more than $800 on Eviews software unless more than 10 students sign up for the course.

E-mail #3 highlights
The budget for software is somewhat flexible. However, it is not to exceed $1,000 under any circumstances.

There is no restriction whatsoever in the stimulus regarding budget vis-a-vis number of students signing up for the course.

NO is the correct answer

C. The graduate coordinator believes that the economics department will be able to open the course.

E-mail #2 highlights
'In fact, there is a good chance that we will have more than 15 students in the course by the deadline.'

Since, atleast 15 students are required to open the course, it can be inferred that ' The graduate coordinator believes that the economics department will be able to open the course.'

YES is the correct answer

NO, NO, YES is the correct answer sequence

Official Explanation

The economics department will offer a course in spatial econometrics if more than 14 students sign up for the course.

In Email #1, the graduate coordinator states that the dean will not open the course unless at least 15 students sign up by February 1. If more than 14 students register by February 1, then at least 15 students will have registered and the course will be opened.

Answer: Yes

The economics department cannot spend more than $800 on Eviews software unless more than 10 students sign up for the course.

The second inference is not supported by the information in the three sources. E-mail #3 confirms that the software budget is capped at $1,000. There are no specifications given regarding a spending maximum of $800.

Answer: No

The graduate coordinator believes that the economics department will be able to open the course.

The third inference is supported by the information in the three sources. In E-mail #2, the graduate coordinator states that the department is more than likely to have 3 more
students register by the deadline. This would enable the course to be opened.

Answer: Yes

The dean of the college will not open the course in spatial econometrics if more than 25 students sign up.

The fourth inference is not supported by the information in the three sources. No information is given to suggest that the course will not open if more than 25 students
register.

Answer: No
