Last month I visited with our econometrics instructor to discuss the possibility of offering a new course on spatial econometrics. Two weeks ago, we decided to open the course to both graduate and undergraduate students. The dean of the college said that he will not open the course unless at least 15 students sign up by February 1. At this point, we have 12 students signed up for the spatial econometrics course. We need only 3 more students to sign up to be able to offer the course. I do not believe that we should offer any incentives for students to sign up, as we are more than likely to have 3 more students register, and we have at least one more week until the deadline. In fact, there is a good chance that we will have more than 15 students in the course by the deadline. Keep in mind that we have to provide each student in the course with a free copy of Eviews econometric software, which costs us $50 per copy. The budget for software is somewhat flexible. However, it is not to exceed $1,000 under any circumstances. If the number of course registrants exceeds 20, then we will have to offer one copy per two users or look for other ways to reduce the cost per person.
