I am currently working in the arts industry at one of the top galleries in the world. I graduated in 2023 from University of Michigan with a degree in general studies (combination of english and microbiology) and graduated with a 3.7 gpa. I also hold a masters from Parsons School of Design (one of the best design schools in the country) with a 3.9 in Art and Design History and Theory. I am hoping to pivot to get my MBA to go into consulting.

Hi, your background is beautifully non-traditional, and it works. A Michigan undergrad (3.7 GPA), followed by a Parsons master’s (3.9 GPA) in a niche academic field, positions you well to show intellectual range. Your experience in one of the top global art galleries adds credibility and uniqueness.

The pivot to consulting is reasonable, your biggest task is articulating transferable skills (client engagement, research, communication) and building a strong quant foundation via test scores (currently not provided).

With compelling essays, you’re a legit candidate for Yale, Tuck, Darden, and even Columbia. M7s like HBS/GSB are possible, but the execution will need to be perfect.

Hi Anoushka, the academic performance (8.78/10), research internship, and scholarship point to a solid academic base.

You’ve backed it with leadership across debate, class rep, and karate, which adds color. However, the profile’s big question mark is work experience—no clarity yet on years, company brand, or quantifiable impact.

INSEAD expects at least 2Y+ full-time experience, and it's critical to demonstrate maturity, professional impact, and leadership progression. Also, test score is missing, INSEAD looks for 695+ GMAT or ~325 GRE equivalents.

You have solid raw materials, but INSEAD will need clarity on job experience and a test score to make this a strong shot.

tldr: Good profile; improved score will be key; Aug attempt means you can only target R2 because school selection will depend on multiple variables, including the score, and 13 schools seem like a random selection; not every school is liberal on scholarships.
Healthcare consulting is a logical step and aligns with your long-term stated goal.
Happy to speak if you wish to.

Thank you for sharing your detailed profile, Dr. Harsh Aggarwal @DrHarsh. We commend your strong track record in healthcare, social impact, leadership, and academics. You seem to be a mission-driven candidate with unique strengths, especially in the healthcare domain, which top business schools value.

The GMAT Focus 655 and Classic GMAT 700 are on the lower side for M7 and other elite schools. With your goal of targeting scholarships and highly selective schools, retaking the GMAT and aiming for a 695+ will improve your odds. All the best for your GMAT retake! You can take a look at this success story.

Work Experience (4+ years): Significant breadth across government, private, and NGO sectors. Currently in a managerial role at a philanthropic healthcare foundation, this is a differentiator. Alignment with post-MBA goals in consulting and healthcare leadership.

In terms of extracurriculars & leadership, your profile shines well. Founder & Co-founder of impactful NGOs. Published medical researcher with 4 international papers. Organizing blood drives, CMEs, LGBTQ+ empowerment, and mentoring creates a compelling narrative of social impact and advocacy. Head Boy, event leader, quiz winner, good leadership theme.

Clarity on career transition is important: Moving from clinical medicine to business is bold and admirable. Ensure you clearly articulate why an MBA is necessary now. What skills do you lack? Why consulting as a bridge makes sense for your long-term healthcare leadership goal.

You can also explore schools like IESE, McCombs, Kelley, Carlson, HEC Paris, WHU, and Rotterdam.

With your background, you must ensure your narrative is tight, authentic, and MBA-relevant. Focus on leadership, resilience, social impact, and global vision. Don't be overly technical or medical.

Helpful questions to reflect on (and address in applications)
1. What specific skills are you lacking for the shift to consulting and healthcare strategy?
2. How have your leadership experiences shaped your perspective as a future healthcare business leader?
3. What is the measurable impact of your NGOs and mental health club? Can you quantify that more?
4. Can you show how your LGBTQ+ identity informs your leadership style or sense of empathy?

We’d love to learn more about your professional experience and personal journey so we can offer a more tailored assessment of your profile and evaluate your chances at your target schools more accurately. If you'd like, feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

We are hosting a Coffee Session: “Candid conversation with successful MBA Applicant to US & EU schools!” on August 7, 2025 | 9:00 PM IST | 11:30 AM ET. Click here to know more details. Register for the session now!

Hi Dr. Harsh, this is an impactful profile.

Your MBBS gold medal, 4+ years across govt/NGO/private setups, and founding Sanjeevani (42k+ beneficiaries) create a powerful mission-driven story. The switch into consulting/managerial roles is feasible, especially with the public health + operational exposure.

A 700 GMAT Classic is just at the lower edge for M7, so retaking to hit 730+ would increase odds significantly at Booth/Wharton/GSB. Yale, Fuqua, Ross, and LBS are strong cultural fits given your social impact and healthcare track.

Your LGBTQ identity and grassroots leadership could make you stand out for scholarships if framed authentically. The GPA is strong, so focus the app on scale of impact, leadership under pressure, and why business education is the inflection point now.

You have a purpose-driven profile worth refining. Let’s sharpen the story and scholarship angle.

Hey Harsh,
Great profile.
Having known people from Hans foundation up close, I also know your work there can come out very well.
And yes, as most comments earlier pointed out, the weakest link in the chain is the GMAT score.
Thankfully the GMAT score is
a) not beyond repair; with a 695-725, you can get the best of top schools, that focus on HealthCare Consulting, likely with good scholarships.
b) even with your current score, we could highlight the diversity of your profile, and likely get admits to top schools.

As such, I would even suggest you prepare parallelly for your GMAT retake, but also begin your applications yesterday, since you may still be able to manage 2-3 superstrong applications within R1

Hope that helps. For a free, 1-to-1 profile review over the phone, please submit your profile on TheIvyLeagueEdge(dot)com/index(dot)php/contactus/

Hey Simanta, you’ve built a well-rounded, impact-driven profile.

Despite a modest undergraduate CGPA (7.72), your recent momentum, EY awards, leadership roles in social impact, and certifications (Azure, UX/UI, PM) add a ton of depth. Your tech-heavy work in identity and access management plus UI/UX gives you an ideal foundation for a pivot to product management.

The profile shines with your layered extracurriculars: teaching, sustainability event leadership, fitness mentoring, and even dog training, all give you a multi-dimensional identity. These can make a real difference at schools like ISB, HEC, and LBS. INSEAD might be a slight stretch unless the GMAT comes in strong (aim 690+ equivalent), but still worth trying.

You’re clearly a “builder” in work and life. Let that come through in the essays.

MBA Info:

Why I want my MBA: Joined Big 4 audit in the renewable energy practice; realized that it’s good to get a solid understanding of the market sector, but the impact is really limited. Almost 3 years later, joined Big 4 accounting and transaction advisory as an assistant manager, focusing on disruptive events (M&A, carve-outs, transactions). Want to get more direct deal exposure in the sector; believe IB and an MBA can help me do that.

Target schools: Wharton, CBS, Booth, and Stern. (open to suggestion for other options)

Background:

Asian male 26, Chinese citizen, but has lived in Canada since 18 years old.

Story: I grew up in a semi-pastoral area of Northwestern China after my parents moved there from central China as public servants to help build a growing community. The region relies on traditional energy like coal, and I saw firsthand the health and environmental toll it takes. That experience pushed me to want to drive change toward renewable energy. I was admitted to a top Chinese university through the Chinese college entrance exam, but chose to study in Canada instead. Coming from an underdeveloped area with limited English education and little information about studying abroad, I had to self-teach English, navigate a foreign system, and overcome financial and informational barriers to make it happen.

Work ex: 3 years in EY audit (staff - senior), 1.5 years in Deloitte advisory (assistant manager, did several high-profile engagements that I can add to my resume) - both in Canada, focused on renewable energy.

Undergrad school/major: Top-tier business program in Ontario, but noname for US MBA application, major in accounting and minor in economics.

EC: nothing special, volunteered as an English teacher for Chinese remote area during summers at Uni, career service volunteer at Uni mentored international students for resume and career strategy.

Certification: Canada CPA.

Thank you for sharing your profile, @lmx4real! Your story, growing up in rural China affected by coal dependency > moving abroad > building skills in audit/advisory > now aspiring to drive investment in clean energy, is powerful, personal, and well-aligned with IB ambitions in the ESG/infra space.

Top schools want candidates who show mission-driven clarity. You’ve got that. Big 4 in both audit + transaction advisory is a good mix. Being an Assistant Manager in advisory with experience on major deals is directly relevant to IB. Canadian CPA helps boost academic credibility and strengthens the finance foundation. Adcoms value applicants who’ve shown grit. Your transition from a pastoral Chinese region > Canada > Big 4 roles > and CPA qualifies as an overcoming-the-odds story. Use this authentically in your essays (ideally, your personal statement or diversity essay for Wharton or CBS). Working in Canada with global clients, studying abroad, and navigating two systems puts you in the “global citizen” category, a strength for U.S. schools like Columbia and Wharton.

Areas to strengthen or clarify:
1. Your ECs are somewhat light. The volunteer work is great, but no leadership titles or consistent long-term involvement outside work.
If possible, you can lead a professional initiative (like starting a renewables-focused deal newsletter/blog, volunteer to run ESG analysis in your firm, or mentor junior associates). Reconnect with your career services mentorship at university, see if you can formalize your mentoring or lead a small alumni group. This helps show leadership, initiative, and community engagement.

2. Your 3.5 GPA is good but not eye-catching, and your school may not be known to U.S. adcoms.
The CPA and GRE 329 already help. Highlight the rigor of your undergrad coursework (quantitative classes, CPA prep, etc.).

3. IB is a highly competitive post-MBA, especially for non-U.S. citizens, due to visa hurdles and industry hiring patterns.
Focus on your sector depth (renewables/infra/energy) as your edge in IB. Consider also exploring Project Finance, Corporate Development, or ESG-focused Asset Management - sectors that value your background and might offer greater international access.

Other Schools that you can explore: Johnson (Cornell), Yale SOM and Tepper.

Questions to reflect & build into Essays:
1. What’s the single most impactful moment from your renewable energy work?
2. When have you led under pressure without a formal title?
3. How do you want to shape renewable infrastructure in the next 10 years?
4. What makes you resilient? How does that show up at work or in life?

Apply strategically (mix of reach, target, and yield-strong schools). Would you like help structuring your resume, goal statement, and school selection next? Please feel free to Book a profile evaluation session.

Hi, this is a compelling profile,

Three years in advisory focused on M&A and renewable energy in Canada, combined with personal history growing up in a coal-reliant region, give your career narrative real purpose. The GRE 329 (~710 GMAT equivalent) is competitive, and the career pivot into energy finance fits well with the likes of Wharton, Stern, and Booth. If you plan to retake or validate math rigor, consider adding quantitative coursework or certifications.

Your story of combining lived environmental understanding with finance tools is unique, craft it into an investment or transformation narrative. If you want optional school fit matches, Columbia’s Energy Finance Lab and MIT Sloan’s climate finance resources make great fits.

You have the ingredients, place the WHY as strongly as the WHAT.

I recently took the GMAT Focus and scored a 625 (81Q / 85V / 77DI) and am planning to take again in mid-September. In the short-term, I plan to return to my role as a consultant for a few years but would eventually like to exit into sports management or something adjacent. I was a DI athlete at Notre Dame and would love to use my career to return to the sports world in a professional fashion. I am targeting midwest schools only.

Hi, solid foundation here with a defined pivot.

A 700 GMAT Classic and consulting background give credibility for a short-term return to consulting. Your long-term aim of working in sports management complements the academic pedigree. Given your Midwest preference, Booth and Kellogg are strong fits; Ross and Mendoza are realistic options too. With your DI athletics experience at Notre Dame, you can credibly make the case for this pivot.

Probably most valuable: your personal drive and athletic insight give you authenticity in sports consulting. Demonstrating athletic leadership, contacts, or sports-related business knowledge in essays will sharpen impact.

Bottom line: you’ve got the test score and domain signal, tie them together in the narrative.

I am a Taiwanese journalist and have been honored with the Golden Tripod Award, a national-level journalism award. My work focuses on in-depth reporting on social issues, finance, and real estate. Currently, I am a staff writer at Commonwealth Magazine, one of Taiwan's most trusted print media outlets.

Over the past four years, I have witnessed the dramatic changes and challenges facing the media industry. I am acutely aware of Taiwan's media trust crisis, largely due to its high degree of political polarization. The traditional advertising model is also rapidly disintegrating as audiences become more fragmented across different platforms. Data from the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report confirms this trend: Taiwan's younger generations are increasingly turning to social media and video platforms, making it difficult for traditional media to sustain a single, stable business model. Despite these significant challenges, I remain a staunch believer in the indispensable role of quality journalism in society.

My decision to pursue an MBA at this critical juncture stems from a deep-seated desire to drive industry-wide change. This aspiration is a natural extension of my past work, where I was driven by a relentless pursuit of truth and a commitment to creating tangible impact. From my independent feature on Taiwan's last legal brothel for the United Daily News to leading the award-winning Commonwealth Magazine cover story on "White-Collar Fraud," my reporting has not only exposed problems but also directly led to legislative and regulatory reforms by the Executive Yuan.

While I am proud of my journalistic achievements, seeing talented young journalists leave the industry has made me realize that the power of individual reporting alone is insufficient to address the systemic commercial and organizational crises facing Taiwan's media. To transform individual successes into industry-wide transformation, I need to move beyond my journalistic expertise and learn how to reshape a media organization from a business perspective.

### MBA Goals: Filling Gaps to Arm Myself for Change

My experience at Commonwealth Magazine has trained me to be a problem-solver. Each of my articles not only presents a problem but also seeks to find a solution. To address the media industry's predicament, specifically how to **transform the "impact" of reporting into a "sustainable business model"** for media organizations, I require systematic business training. This is why I am pursuing an MBA—to acquire a set of critical skills that will address the core pain points of the media industry.

* Business Strategy and Management: I aim to learn how to fundamentally solve the problem of declining advertising revenue. I will study the successful cases of The New York Times and The Economist, learning how to formulate long-term business strategies and build diversified revenue streams such as paid subscriptions and membership models to adapt to a rapidly changing market. I will learn to treat a media product as a business project, managing its entire lifecycle from market research to monetization.
* Data Analytics and AI Applications: I will master tools in business analytics and user behavior analysis to gain precise insights into audience needs and content preferences. This will help me transform my unique journalistic advantages—such as my exclusive analysis of the failed Far EasTone-Asia Pacific Telecom merger or the Dubai real estate boom—into sustainable products. Concurrently, I will explore the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in news production, distribution, and exclusive information gathering, allowing me to create maximum impact with limited resources in a fragmented market.
* Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Through MBA case studies and practical projects, I will cultivate an innovative mindset, learning how to identify market opportunities, develop Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), and iterate quickly. This is crucial for carving out new business models and blue oceans for Taiwan's independent media in a saturated market.
* Financial Management and Organizational Leadership: My experience covering the financial beat has given me an understanding of capital markets. An MBA will further enhance my knowledge of media financing, investment decisions, and cost control, ensuring my innovative ideas can secure solid financial backing. Furthermore, I hope to learn leadership skills for organizational change, enabling me to effectively guide media teams through digital transformation, and attract and retain top talent.

### Post-MBA Plan: Strategically Applying New Skills to Return to Media

My post-MBA plan is divided into two phases, designed to seamlessly integrate my journalistic insights with the business acumen I gain from my studies.

* Short-Term Plan: Gain Practical Experience in Management Consulting
After graduation, I plan to join a management consulting firm. I will view this phase as an accelerated learning platform, applying my MBA-acquired skills in business strategy, data analytics, and financial modeling to provide solutions to companies across various industries. This experience will equip me with a highly structured set of thinking tools, compensating for my lack of corporate operational experience as a journalist.

While I do not have hard skills in coding, my academic background in history and psychology, coupled with four years of journalistic experience, has given me a deep insight into human nature, social trends, and user needs. I believe that combining this unique cross-disciplinary insight with the business tools I acquire in consulting will be my core advantage, allowing me to provide clients with more holistic and human-centric solutions.

* Long-Term Plan: Return to the Media Industry and Lead Transformation
After accumulating 2-3 years of consulting experience, I will return to the media industry, seeking a role in strategy or product management at a major Taiwanese media company or an emerging digital content startup. My ultimate goal is to leverage my consulting-acquired skills in business analysis and organizational change management, combined with my content insights, to lead media digital transformation projects and localize international success stories.

Specifically, I plan to:
* Design a Subscription Model Tailored to the Local Market: I will draw inspiration from The New York Times' "all-access subscription" strategy, evaluating how to combine high-quality in-depth reporting with local lifestyle content (e.g., food, travel, arts) to design a paid product that builds user habits and increases retention.
* Establish a Diversified Revenue Model for Independent Media: I will use my business modeling skills from consulting to design business models for independent media outlets that go beyond subscriptions. This could include revenue from member communities, offline events, and content licensing to ensure their sustainable and independent operation.
* Leverage AI to Enhance Content Value: I will explore how to use AI, not just for automated reporting, but to unlock its potential for exclusive information gathering. This will help media organizations find unique story leads in the deluge of data, enhancing the exclusivity and competitiveness of their content.

Hey, what an inspiring path.

Your reporting bylines, especially stories that led to legislative reform, and the prestigious Golden Tripod Award gives you a powerful platform.

Coupled with a 725 GMAT Focus and GPA 3.7, you’re academically and analytically competitive for M7. That, plus your media leadership experience, pairs naturally with Stanford or Harvard if you can highlight how business skills can transform Taiwan’s trust‐fragile media ecosystem into sustainable ventures.

Programs like Haas, Kellogg, and Stern will value your societal impact and innovation lens; INSEAD and MIT Sloan could also be excellent fits for your industry transformation goals. Emphasize your aim to build new business models for journalism, subscription, AI‐driven analytics, and membership that create scalable change.

This is a rare media‐management crossover. With tight storytelling, you can land big.

Hi John,

Your 705 GMAT Focus (~680 GMAT classic) and excellent GPA (3.98) set a solid foundation. The real impact lies in your Navy background: teaching nuclear engineering in high-stakes environments signals discipline, technical precision, and leadership under pressure.

Energy transformation and advanced nuclear development align well with top programs like Wharton and Sloan’s LGO, which value operational excellence and global systems thinking.

To maximize impact, frame your application around how the Navy instilled systems-level leadership and how you’ll scale that from defense into civilian nuclear/clean energy innovation. This narrative can be compelling at Wharton, Harvard, and MIT.

You have a unique and powerful story, arranging it around energy systems and leadership vision will make it shine.
