The GRE is pretty solid and given that you come from an underrepresented pool, you can aim for other top schools that do a good job in consulting such as Ross, Darden and potentially even Kellogg. NYU also has a strong affinity for candidates with lower work exp so may have that and Cornell on the radar as well.

These all seem like safety/scholarship schools…

I am not sure if schools will be giving as many scholarships for GRE but your score is up there. Worth checking with programs such as UNC and maybe Fuqua or Tepper and maybe a leg up too.

Really? All the adcoms I talked with said that they're gre/gmat agnostic. Is it actually true that they don't hand out higher scholarships to students who gave gre? Should I give gmat then?

I spent 4 years in management consulting at a big 4 firm after graduating from college, but I have spent the last 1.5 years working as a professional poker player. Looking to get my MBA to transition back into the corporate world with a job in either media / entertainment or technology.

Hi @tarheelpoker , I hope all is well!

With 4 years of management consulting experience, your profile has a good foundation for MBA applications. Transitioning to professional poker adds a unique and compelling narrative, highlighting risk-taking, decision-making under pressure, and strategic thinking qualities valued in media/entertainment roles. Your poker career should be addressed thoughtfully in your essays, framing it as a strategic, growth-driven choice to enrich your story. However, your GMAT Focus score of 625 is below average for top MBA programs, and improving it (655+) could significantly boost your chances. Schools like UCLA, USC, and NYU Stern, with their strong ties to media and entertainment, could align with your goals. We would like to know more about your profile like work exp., achievements, challenges faced and impact created, these details will help us identify, if you can pull out good stories from your experience and shortlist schools for you.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a 1:1 call with you to discuss your profile in detail and gauge your chances to identify the best-fit schools. Please feel free to schedule a profile evaluation call according to your convenience.

Short term goals - moving into a PM position in Health Tech company

Long term goals - having my own health tech startup

Been working as a Software Engineer for 5+ years (6+ years at matriculation), without a formal degree (mostly for health tech companies, that's why I studied medicine and chemical engineering before becoming a software engineer, the health field interests me very much)
Graduated this June with a Bachelors in Business administration and management, GPA 4.46

My main EC is that I'm a two time national champion powerlifter

I'm quite unsure about my GMAT score, especially the quant one.
675 QR:81 VR:86: DI:84
I feel that this quant score would give way to questions, rightfully so. Should I defer my application to round 2 and retake the gmat?

Hey, Merthen

Your GMAT FE score 675 puts you in a good spot for many top MBA programs. This score shows you did well in verbal and DI, which means you communicate and analyze well. But your quant score might worry some adcoms for programs emphasizing quantitative proficiency. I would suggest including your quantitative skills in the applications and their impact.

Boosting your GMAT quant score could boost your application, but your 4.46 GPA, six years in health tech, and unique extracurriculars make your profile rock-solid. Your MBA goals align with leveraging your skills for innovation and show your entrepreneurial drive to impact the industry positively. If you think a better GMAT quant score would boost your application, consider retaking it before applying. But if you feel sure that your strong GPA, work experience, and well-defined career goals make up for the quant score, you can go ahead and send in your applications now.

We’d be happy to discuss your profile in more detail to enhance your application’s competitiveness.Feel free to schedule a call with us here for an in-depth profile evaluation and additional benefits. We match you with the students and alums of top B-Schools according to your background and target schools.

Hey! That's fantastic profile. your GMAT is just fine - it is right where your average would be and GMAT is not what gets you into the M7's. The only reason to get over the average is if you want to cover up some issues with GPA but it looks like your GPA is solid (assuming on a 5-point scale?). The biggest question will be your professional growth / career. Have you been able to stand out among peers, etc.

One aspect I am not sure about is having just completed your Undergrad. This may be a weakness as you have had a job pre-Undergrad and for an employer and AdCom as well that may signal that your job was not that great perhaps so you will definitely need to explain this aspect as it has some risk associated for the AdCom/school with it so you need to make them feel very comfortable there.

Thank you for your reply, it never crossed my mind, that my work experience would be an issue, as I'm on the brink of becoming a senior software dev, so my job would usually be considered something people do after undergrad, just that I never graduated until now (and in a different discipline). Could that really be an issue? The only reason I actually got a degree, so that I can move up in my career, which is the same reason I'm applying for MBAs.

28 Aug 2024, 18:04
Hi. I don't think it is an issue as a problem but I would explain it, esp if it is not a global brand. You want it to be clear from your essays that you were not a junior developer and make sure that your recommenders are talking about your level of seniority so that concern is eliminated. Think about it this way - your background is not fitting a typical mold. This means there is more scrutiny, attention and risk for AdCom to take you compared to a typical applicant. AdCom have little tolerance for risk in Admissions unfortunately.

Hi Merthen
I am Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, GPA and GMAT looks decent. See a higher GMAT would definitely enhance your chances of getting an admit, but your current score is decent too. Now the important part is to present an overall strong profile.
Apart your GMAT score, your application should also highlight some skills that adcoms look for- like leadership experience, problem-solving skills, and ability to work in groups. Being a national power lifter will add value to your application. Have you ever been involved in some social activities/ NGO work?

Now my main concern is your work experience, adcoms usually consider experience after your undergrad, and since you have mentioned completing your graduation a few months back, I would recommend reaching out to schools and getting clarity over this. We can also connect for a detailed discussion regarding your profile, specifically regarding your work experience.

Thank you for your reply, I never thought that being a software engineer, on the brink of becoming a senior, wouldn't be considered after grad work experience, if not for the technicality that I haven't finished my chem engineer degree.

Wow, that is even more interesting. I got my bachelor while working full-time too. Something may hinder is that sometimes some school requires you to have 2 years post-undergrad experience. However, I am unsure whether the condition can be compensated by having 6+ years working experiences.

After working in Telecom for nearly 2 years, I felt the need to switch to Management, prior knowledge and exposure to Strategy, Operations, and Product Management propelled me to look for Consulting as a Future Career Option.

I've researched top MiM and Strategy colleges mainly in Europe, some in the US, and avoided the UK because of my low GPA. I'm hoping to get a call from my top 3-4 picks in the R2 admissions.

What are my chances of getting into HEC, ESSEC, ESCP, Ross, Fuqua, and Cornell MPS. Should I also consider INSEAD (R3) or LBS (R2).

Hi Dannybouy
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile reflects a strong foundation in telecommunications and a clear intent to transition into consulting, backed by a decent score and prior exposure to strategy and operations. Targeting top programs demonstrates your ambition to gain a robust foundation in management. While your GPA may pose a challenge, your work experience and well-researched school list strengthens your case. Considering INSEAD or LBS could be worthwhile if you feel ready to articulate a compelling narrative.

Could you share more about specific achievements in your telecom role that highlight your leadership or problem-solving skills? Additionally, how do you plan to address your GPA in your applications to showcase your academic potential?

Hi @Dannybouy , I hope you are doing well! Your GMAT Focus score of 645 and a GPA of 7.32 are slightly below average for highly competitive programs like HEC, LBS, and INSEAD. These factors could make admission to your top choices more challenging unless you have standout essays, impactful leadership experience, or strong extracurriculars to boost your application.

For HEC, ESSEC, and ESCP, your chances may be moderate to competitive depending on how well you articulate your story and goals. Ross and Fuqua may be stretch options due to the lower GMAT and GPA. Cornell MPS might be more attainable, given its broader range of accepted profiles.

INSEAD (R3) or LBS (R2) is ambitious, but worth considering if you feel your essays are ready and you have addressed your GPA effectively, perhaps by showcasing academic rigor through certifications or quantitative coursework.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a 1:1 call with you to discuss your profile in detail and gauge your chances for the best-fit schools. Please feel free to schedule a profile evaluation call according to your convenience.

Hi @oyglor , I hope you are doing well!

Your GMAT scores (595 GMAT Focus and 600 GMAT Classic) are on the lower side for top-tier programs. It’s important to consider retaking the GMAT to improve your score to 700+ and strengthen your candidacy. Additionally, you should focus on highlighting specific achievements and leadership experiences during your consulting career to demonstrate your impact and potential for growth. We would like to know more about your profile like achievements, international exposure, challenges faced, impact created, extracurriculars and more, discussing these details, will help us identify if you can pull out good stories from your experience.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a 1:1 call with you to discuss your profile in detail and shortlist schools for you. Please feel free to schedule a profile evaluation call according to your convenience.

After spending three and a half years at India's fastest-growing food-tech companies, where I served as a Key Accounts Manager and got promoted to Associate Program Manager in the central strategy team, I aspire to become a Senior Program Manager at a leading technology company, preferably Amazon or Google, where I can contribute my expertise and leadership in driving impactful projects and initiatives. As I advance in my career, I aim to take on leadership roles within the organization, including managing teams, projects, or even departments.

If you aspire for a career in FAANG, you will need change your school shortlist. Darden, Fuqua, Yale are solid for consulting, but not the best in the market for PM roles in Big Tech, further being in East Coast they are at a locational disadvantage, these programs do a solid job on East Coast. Think about adding Tepper, UCLA Anderson, and maybe USC/Foster to mix. Mccombs and Ross are solid programs for tech recruiting. Kellogg, MIT, Haas again really good for Tech recruiting, but maybe on the ambitious side for your profile.
Your overall profile looks pretty good, focusing on the applications will be a key for success. All the best!

Lakshya - if you consider your applications as a buyer-seller scenario, what are you offering to the buyer? Is it a compelling product? The combination of a near-par GMAT score, a GPA much lower than schools average's, and your aspiration for Tech PM in FAANG leaves very schools where your candidacy can be strong. While I wish you the best for R1 applications, should (God forbid) things don't work out, consider revisiting your strategies and rethinking what variables you can control. Improving your GMAT to offset the GPA is an important consideration for you.

Hi @Vivek@ , I hope you are doing well! Your GRE score of 331 is great, but a 2.5 GPA is a significant challenge. You shall focus on highlighting strong work achievements, address the GPA with additional coursework, and craft a clear story linking your tech experience to consulting goals. However, to determine your chances we would like to know more about your profile, and discussing more details, will help us identify if you can pull out good stories from your experience.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a 1:1 call with you to discuss your profile in detail and shortlist schools for you. Feel free to schedule a profile evaluation call according to your convenience.
