Can anyone help me to understand this concept- A number X, 200% more than a number Y, is 3Y. But a man's age (say A), a man who is five times older than his son (son's age is say B), is 5B. Why? Why is it not 6B? Also, is there no difference between "x times older than" and "x times as old as" when we are discussing word problems? Where am I going wrong, can anyone please help me understand this logic?
Thanks in advance!

Notice the word 200% more than. ..... Assume X = Y.
If statement is - X is 2 times of number (or) X is 200% of Y. Then ==> X=2Y is correct.
But the given statement is - 200% more than Y. it implies ==> Y + 200% of Y = Y+2Y = 3Y. Hence X = 3Y.
But a man's age (say A), a man who is five times older than his son (son's age is say B), is 5B. Why? Why is it not 6B?
In this statement -- You are misunderstanding older & more to be same. But it is not so. Older just means elder, senior.... It just used to represent age factor. It doesn't mean more or less. So it is 5B.
If the sentence is modified to - a man's age (say A), a man age is five times more than his son's age B ==> then it will be A=6B.
Also, is there no difference between "x times older than" and "x times as old as" when we are discussing word problems? Yes you are right. there is no difference in meaning.

Had been struggling with this concept from quite some time. That means, "x times older than" = "x times as old as". And, "x times more than" means "(x+1) times as old as".
Thank you so much for the explanation, cleared my doubts.
