D is best in comparison to E and B since it is crisp and clear. All three of them are S-V error free.

(A) because they convey the moving inner-journey
(B) due to the fact that it conveys the moving inner-journey
(C) because of their conveying the moving inner-journey
(D) because it conveys the moving inner-journey
(E) for the reason that it conveys the moving inner-journey

IMO Answer D.

The answer is D.

The writing of Augustine of Hippo has inspired and captivated countless individuals, fundamentally because it conveys the moving inner journey of man searching for the divine in a lucid and compelling fashion.

Despite being thousands of years old, the writing of Augustine of Hippo has inspired and captivated countless individuals, fundamentally because they convey the moving inner-journey of man searching for the divine in a lucid and compelling fashion.

A is wrong because of pronoun error. They does not have a logical antecedent. Logical they refers to writing, which is singular, hence a singular pronoun it is appropriate.
B presents the wrong meaning of the sentence. The writing of Augustine of Hippo has inspired and captivated countless individuals, fundamentally caused by the fact that it conveys the moving inner-journey? Nope. That's a deviation of the intended meaning. In addition, due to the fact that is wordy.
C is wrong because of pronoun error. Their does not have a logical antecedent. In addition, because of their conveying is wrong on the GMAT. Because of has to be followed by a noun, pronoun, or verbing, not a noun or pronoun + verbing. This structure is unacceptable.
E is wordy and not as concise as D. for the reason that it conveys is not as concise as because it conveys. Because is preferred because it rightly provides the reason for the preceding clause.

(A) because they convey the moving inner-journey
(B) due to the fact that it conveys the moving inner-journey
(C) because of their conveying the moving inner-journey
(D) because it conveys the moving inner-journey
(E) for the reason that it conveys the moving inner-journey

the writing conveys the moving inner-joy, therefore A and C is wrong.
among the answer choices B, D, and E, there is a connector problem. since it is stylistic problem, "because" is most concise among other choices. therefore B is correct answer.

Competition Mode Question

Despite being thousands of years old, the writing of Augustine of Hippo has inspired and captivated countless individuals, fundamentally because they convey the moving inner-journey of man searching for the divine in a lucid and compelling fashion.

(A) because they convey the moving inner-journey
(B) due to the fact that it conveys the moving inner-journey
(C) because of their conveying the moving inner-journey
(D) because it conveys the moving inner-journey
(E) for the reason that it conveys the moving inner-journey

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The subject of the sentence (the writing, which is singular) does not agree with the pronoun (they, which is plural and needs to be replaced by the singular it).

It is important to avoid wordy or unduly long phrases such as due to the fact that or for the reason that and instead use a shorter word like because.

A. The subject of the sentence (the writing, which is singular) does not agree with the pronoun (they, which is plural)

B. due to the fact that is wordy and can be replaced by because

C. the pronoun their, which is plural, does not agree with the subject the writing, which is singular; the phrase is awkward and long

D. the subject of the sentence (the writing) agrees with the pronoun (it); because is concise

E. the phrase for the reason that is wordy and can be replaced by the single word because

Competition Mode Question

B. due to the fact that is wordy and can be replaced by because
E. the phrase for the reason that is wordy and can be replaced by the single word because

is there a list of words that are poor constructors that all else equal will be less right?

"for the reason that" and "due to the fact" are not superior to because in this question.
