Choice A is wrong because, (Explanation from the source)

This answer choice is stylistically flawed. Using both Despite and still, which are both opposition words, creates Redundancy. The use of a Double conjunction or phrase is one of the specific redundancies that should always be corrected.

What helps us identify this Redundancy is the following Stop Sign:

Though/Although/Even though/Despite/In spite of... later followed by but/yet/however/still/nevertheless

B. Adult chimpanzees have up to five times the upper-body strength of an adult human, and despite their friendly and amusing appearances, are still—same as A

C. Despite their friendly and amusing appearances, adult chimpanzees, having up to five times the upper-body strength of an adult human, are --- correct

D. Adult chimpanzees have up to five times the upper-body strength of an adult human, and despite their friendly and amusing appearances, is ----Chimpanzees—is—SV error

E. Despite its friendly and amusing appearance, the adult chimpanzee, having up to five times the upper-body strength of an adult human, are --- Chimpanzee – are-- SV error.
