Hi,
My question pertains to DETERMINERS OF QUANTITY With Count Nouns & With Non-Count Nouns. The table on page 30 of the GMAT Ultimate Grammar book shows that "A GREAT DEAL OF" is not used with Count Nouns. However, the answer key to Exercise 5 (on page 247) shows that it can be used in the sentence Joan drank_______sodas. Sodas appears to me to be a Count Noun. This appears to be a conflict. What am I missing? Please help.

Well, I still have tough time figuring this out....
To answer your question, Yes you can count the number of bottles of Soda you may have but you cannot count the volume...Volume is not countable...why...remember the test.
A noun is countable if it has plural form, and
If it can be written as 1 Volume,2 volumes,3 volumes (This is not possible) and hence...the usage is correct.
I would request experts to pitch in.

My 2 cents: Applying the test here, as we have "Sodas" as opposed to "Soda" in the non-underlined part, it should indicate that it is a "countable noun" and hence the use of "A great deal of" should incorrect here.
