Hello Everyone,

I have taken two GMAT practice tests (official) over 2 weeks and on both of them, I have scored Q46.

The problem I had during the practice is that I did not have enough time to be able to solve the last 5-6 questions so basically guessed the last several questions which were mostly miss.

It is kinda unfortunate cuz I can solve these last 5-6 questions but there is no time left. Both practice tests went exactly similar with no time for the last few.

What can I do to improve my speed? or is there something else I should be doing? I am kinda lost as to what I could do at this point that will bring the greatest ROI to my Quant score.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!


Hi janbol,

Struggling with time is just a symptom. The actual problem lies somewhere else. If you are running out of time for the last 5 questions, that means that you are probably taking more than the optimum time for the initial questions which in turn means that you are not using the best method to solve questions.

Let me explain it to you by using the example of Data sufficiency questions. Below is the comparison of how a student solves a DS question using the normal approach and using the methodical approach.


General strategyMethodical approach
Read the question stem Read the question stem and do a certain pre-analysis
Directly dive into solving individual statementsIdentify what is the exact information asked by the question stem and then jump into solving statements
The process consumes a lot of time and there are high chances that you will get stuck in betweenAs the student is clear about the information needed, the process is simple and consumes less time


So, the pre-analysis is very important in the process of solving DS questions. The gist is there are certain strategies you have to use in order to solve questions under the optimum time. So, focus on learning the right methodology. And while you learn the methodology, do not focus on time. Just focus on the process and make sure you get it right. Once you are comfortable with the process, you can start taking timed quizzes.

Regarding your timing issues, honestly, the best way to improve your timing is by improving your GMAT quant skills. As you develop mastery of each individual quant topic, better timing WILL follow. In fact, a great way to know how well you have mastered a particular topic is to be cognizant of your reaction time when seeing a particular question. For example, consider the following simple question with which many students who are beginning their prep struggle:

14! is equal to which of the following?

(A) 87,178,291,200
(B) 88,180,293,207
(C) 89,181,294,209
(D) 90,000,000,003
(E) 91,114,114,114

Upon seeing this question, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Trying to add up the values in the expression? If you are able to quickly recognize that using the “5 x 2 pair rule” will allow you to attack the problem quickly and efficiently (see the solution below).

Solution:

14! = 14 × 13 × 12 × 11 × 10 × 9 × 8 × 7 × 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1.

Notice that there is at least one (5 × 2) pair contained in the product of these numbers. It follows that the units digit must be a zero. The only number with zero as the units digit is 87,178,291,200.

Answer: A

Although this is just one example of many, you see that you must have many tools in your toolbox to efficiently attack each GMAT quant question that comes your way. As you gain these skills, you will get faster.
