So what I dont understand is if they feel my gmat score is not upto the mark, why to invite me for interview???? Why not ding me upfront saying your gmat is less...

If my gmat score is an issue, why not say it upfront?

Another learning here is
They find your profile to be impressive enough for ur admit but for your gmat. But there are several 750 gmatters who claim impressive profiles (essays written by consultants) but are "Gutter" (i u understand the Indian word )in the interview. So they (if they have rolling admissions like or example Kellogg ) will call you for interview and waitlist you in anticipation that too many such "Gutter" proiles turn up.

If You had something linke 760 GMAt then given ur profile your dings would have been WL and your current WL would most probably be admits

I think thats a gross oversimplification... take a peek @ admissions411 from round 1:

Take the guy with 2 alumni recs, and a 770 at Chicago and got denied.
(#8 in r1 on admissions411)

Or the guy with 1 alumni rec, 770 gmat denied at Cornell (not even waitlisted) (#3)

Or the guy with 3.5 GPA, and a 750 rejected at cornell. (#18)

Or the guy at LBS with a 780, 3.7, rejected (#1), or the 770 with a 3.5 who got waitlisted, ... there are bunch..

those dings could be due to other holes
My statement was given a strong profile, WE and essays
A high GMAt score 760+ would definitely convert ding to WL and WL to admits
defintely a huge chance

Seems sort of like a "by definition" argument... if everything else in your package was fine and your GMAT was the only issue, then clearly yes, by definition, changing the part of your application that was the issue would have impact....

The point though is that no one can know whether or not everything else was fine, or if the GMAT was even an issue...
