What a day!
I entered the test center with a happy face and confidence to score 650+, but after 3 and a half hours my eyes were filled with tears. I am so disappointed with my performance today. I got 580 (Q48, V22). I have been preparing for over a year now and this was my second attempt. My mock exam scores were in the range 650-680. I understand I am doing a lot of things wrong with Verbal (as it is clear from my score), so would like to start from scratch. I can give myself at most 2 months and this would be my last attempt. Resources used are: Manhattanprep books, OG2019, Official verbal book.
Would appreciate any advice, suggestion, and tips for Verbal.

Thanks in advance

Hey Harps,

Sorry to hear about this. I would reach out to any of the GMAT wizards on here ie ScottTarget, Empower, etc.

There’s something in the way that you are studying that is not correct and they would be able to give you an idea or at least point you in a direction.

Has your verbal score not budged after practice or do you get extreme test anxiety and test day doesn’t pan out?

If you can score a 48 in Quant you can certainly score higher in verbal than You have done previously.

Best of luck.

Hi Harps,

It is sad to hear that you could not score well even after putting in so much effort. But don’t be disappointed. An improvement is definitely possible. In my journey, I have helped a lot of students improve their score by more than 100 points. Let me share my insights here.

Your Quant score is pretty decent. The only concern is the verbal part. Based on the resources you mentioned, it is likely that you might not be using a standardized and effective approach to solve questions. The resources you mentioned might be great resources for GMAT like questions but to learn the strategies you need something more structured and methodical.

Starting from the scratch is a feasible idea because you have 2 months of time. This time the focus should be on learning the concepts in a methodical way and learning the right strategies to solve the questions. But to suggest you in a better way and provide you with a more structured plan, I would like to know the following details:
  • Were the mocks taken the official ones?
  • If yes, what was the breakdown?
  • And were you following the same specific approach for all the mocks and the actual test or did it differ?

Answers to these questions will help me to guide you better. You can write back to me here or a better way would be to discuss this over a call. You can schedule a free consultation call using the below link.
