Hi All,

I gave my third GMAT attempt today and ended up with a score of 700 (Q50, V34, IR6).
I took my previous two attempts last year at a gap of 20 days from each other without much preparation and scored:
GMAT 1: 670 (Q48, V34, IR7)
GMAT 2: 690 (Q49, V35, IR7)

700 is way less than what I had expected or received in my official gmatprep tests. I scored a 740 in my last gmatprep CAT.
Quant has been my strength, yet I decided to go with verbal first, and it turned out to be a major fiasco.

1) After selecting the test order preferance, I saw a page that said that I'll be taken to the verbal reasoning section now. I thought I'll see the verbal section instructions first, instead the test started immediately. I feel maybe I wasn't ready for it and got a bit flustered.

2) I was reading the arguement/passage/sentence slowly to understand it but was totally lost for the first 4-5 questions. Even though I was reading it, i wasn't able to comprehend anything. As a result, I wasted a lot of time and probably even marked many of the first few questions incorrectly.

3) In between I picked up my pace and started solving a few questions. But when I saw that I was way behind schedule and won't be able to complete the test on time, I got perturbed again and couldn't comprehend anything.

4) I may have also misssed marking the last question as I remember the timer was at 00:02 when I clicked on next....not sure whether that answer got accepted or I bore a penalty for it.

My questions:
#) Is it best practice to start with the section you feel most comfortable with? What do you recommend I should do? Starting with verbal clearly didn't help me today.
#) Why wasn't I able to comprehend the questions? To be honest, this has never happened with me before. The tests I gave last year were without preparation or understanding of the type of questions and strategies to be used. This time, I was certain I'll score well because I had put in a lot of time and effort.
#) How should I increase my comprehension? Any specific books you'd suggest?
#) I believe my nerves got the best of me. How should I work towards tackling it so that I don't squander my next test opportunity?
#) On second thoughts, even after putting so much effort in GMAT, if I'm unable to perform to my level of expectations, would you recommend me to maybe try GRE?

Any and all help is appreciated!
Thank you so much in advance!

Your mind is fresh at the beginning so it is a good idea to start with what you find challenging. Clearly even after taking Quant later, you scored 50 in it. So starting with Verbal seems like a good idea.

Yes, many people feel zoned out in phases of fatigue and/or anxiety. When you start out with the test, you start with a fair bit of anxiety and it takes some time before you are able to get your rhythm back. If you take Quant first and Verbal second, you are likely to experience trouble in the second half of the Verbal section due to fatigue. I suggest you to take 2 strictly timed practice tests with Quant first and 2 strictly timed practice tests with Verbal first (all from the same source). Then decide what is more comfortable to you.

Check out bb's thread on books to read.

#) I believe my nerves got the best of me. How should I work towards tackling it so that I don't squander my next test opportunity?

There is no easy way to deal with test day anxiety. What does help is knowing that you can easily cancel your score and take the test again if it doesn't go well.

#) On second thoughts, even after putting so much effort in GMAT, if I'm unable to perform to my level of expectations, would you recommend me to maybe try GRE?

GRE has easier Quant (irrelevant to you) but a lot more focus on vocabulary. Check out the differences between them before you decide.

Hi SiffyB,

Great questions!~

#) Is it best practice to start with the section you feel most comfortable with? What do you recommend I should do? Starting with verbal clearly didn't help me today.

Honestly, it's a personal preference. Some students prefer to knock out their weaker section first while others prefer to save it for the end of the GMAT. In any case, you can change up the order on the next few practice exams and monitor your performance. For some more information on section order, feel free to check out the following article:

Best GMAT Section Order: How Do I Choose?

#) Why wasn't I able to comprehend the questions? To be honest, this has never happened with me before. The tests I gave last year were without preparation or understanding of the type of questions and strategies to be used. This time, I was certain I'll score well because I had put in a lot of time and effort.

I think nerves really had a negative effect on your test day performance. If you can get your nerves in check, you should be in much better shape for your retake. With that in mind, give this article a read:

How to Eliminate GMAT Test-Day Anxiety

#) How should I increase my comprehension? Any specific books you'd suggest?

If you are referring to publications (as opposed to GMAT prep resources) you can try reading New York Times, Smithsonian, and Scientific American.

#) On second thoughts, even after putting so much effort in GMAT, if I'm unable to perform to my level of expectations, would you recommend me to maybe try GRE?

I think you have what it takes to get a very good GMAT score. However, if you are wondering how things would go on the GRE, you certainly can take a practice exam and then take things from there.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out.
