My question is this--If Y Combinator or TechStars were to appear under experience on a resume/application, would adcoms actually know of either? Would sending a brief explanation be warranted?

If you thought the general population here would know what those are, then why wouldn't adcoms? I'm quite sure they don't live under rocks. And if they did, they probably aren't fit to judge mba apps.
If you have any doubt, feel free to include a line or two in your resume to describe what they are. However, its generally less important what company you worked at. Adcoms are more interested in the role you played and what you, personally, achieved.

Thanks for the advice! While the accelerators are commonplace in tech, I am unsure as to how well known they are outside of tech.
