I applied 2 schools R1, and 3 schools R2. Started studying for the GMAT end of May 2013.

Applications totally consumed my life. I'd say my performance at work was normal until I got my first R1 acceptance. I'd GMAT study at work during down time...but it'd be studying instead of browsing the internet. Likewise, I'd work on essays at work, but again it'd be during down time. If It wasn't for bschool applications, I might've worked marginally harder without apps, but it wasn't very feasible for me to get another promotion this winter, so in all likelihood I wouldn't have worked much harder even if I hadn't been applying. My year end review was great. Once I got into school, I really started phoning it in though.

Applications definitely impacted my personal life though. I drastically cut back on drinking/partying, exercise, and hobbies. I also got into a long-term relationship during the time, so that took up a lot of free time. Had a much more consistent sleep schedule too, since I knew I needed a fresh mind on weekends for gmat studying/essays/interview prep. The stress definitely wore me down after a while too, which surprised me, since I'm usually really good with stress...I guess it was because it was a prolonged 10 month stress.

I have no idea how some people do 8-10+ apps.
