Hello everyone,

I started late on my application for round 2, so I only just did my GMAT focus test today, scoring 585. I fumbled the data insight section.

I think I’m stuck on 585-610 (my scores on my practice tests).

I want to apply for 2024 class because I’m not sure if I can have my office as a sponsor for next time and there might be different circumstances.

Do you think I have any chance at UCLA/NYU/Ann Arbor/Duke Fuqua?

I’ve heard with limited spot, round 3 might be more competitive. So I want to try round 2 especially for UCLA. Except for UCLA, I still have the chance to retake GMAT for R2 of the other universities.

As a background, I’m female, 28 yo, Indonesian, and currently working in one of Indonesia’s biggest bank. I have a 3.33 GPA from an Architecture undergraduate program. I’m one of my company’s high potential talent (that’s why I receive a sponsorship), and right now I’m working in my company’s strategic projects.

Thank you

585 focus is nearly equivalent to a 640 on GMAT regular edition.

But, UCLA is a little bit on the far end of the spectrum of your scores. I would suggest wait and reapply next year.

I’ll be retaking my GMAT focus after the 16 days waiting period is over. I’m not really confident though. But better to try it than never.

For UCLA I think I’m still considering going ahead and submit R2 my current score, even with 0 chance, or wait for R3.

For the other schools, I’ll wait until the second test.

Thanks for the insight!

I don't think any of those schools are going to be viable with that current GMAT score and your GPA. You could try one of them (Michigan would be best) just for the sake of it, but I would drop down to a set of good but lower-ranked schools. Round 3 will be virtually impossible.

If you retake the GMAT and get into the equivalent of the old score in the high 600s at, you might have a shot. There's just not that much margin for error with these competitive schools.

We're happy to help come up with a list, so please reach out to discuss further.

I’ll be retaking my exam after the 16 days waiting period is over. I still think I can improve my data insight score.

Unfortunately, the 16 days is after R2 UCLA deadline, so I think I might just go ahead and submit my current score with 0 chance of getting in.

Hopefully, the scores will be better than now so I can try for the other school’s R2.

My office requires top 30 global schools for the sponsorship. That’s why I’m trying for the high ranked ones. I really want to attend a school in the USA.

Thanks for the insight!

Hey KarmaTheCat,

With R2 deadlines in less than 2 weeks, we understand your concern about university requirements and processes.

We recommend you check the university websites that you mentioned for their admission requirements.

In addition, universities are skimming through the applications and are considering holistic profiles to offer admits.

Hello KarmaTheCat,

I hope you are doing good. Let's break down your chances for each of the mentioned schools:

UCLA Anderson: UCLA is a competitive program, and while your GMAT score is on the lower end of their average range (which is around 710), your unique background, being a female from Indonesia, can be an advantage in terms of diversity. Your professional experience in one of Indonesia's biggest banks and your position as a high-potential talent can also be a strength. Given your concerns about sponsorship, it's good that you're considering applying now. Applying in Round 2 would be advisable for this school.

NYU Stern: NYU also has a competitive applicant pool. Your GMAT score is below their average, but your diverse background and work experience can make your application stand out. Again, given your concerns about sponsorship, applying in Round 2 would be a wise decision.

University of Michigan (Ann Arbor): Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan is another top-tier program. Your GMAT is below their average, but your background and work experience are compelling. If you have the opportunity to retake the GMAT for Round 2, it might strengthen your application.

Duke Fuqua: Duke is known for its collaborative environment and values diversity. While your GMAT score is below their average, your unique background and being a high-potential talent in your bank can be significant strengths. Again, if you can retake the GMAT for Round 2, it might enhance your chances.

Given your background and the fact that you're already recognized as a high-potential talent in your current organization, your professional trajectory seems promising. Admissions committees also consider the potential for future success, so emphasizing your achievements, leadership qualities, and aspirations in your essays and interviews will be crucial.

Here are a few recommendations:

Retake the GMAT: If possible, retaking the GMAT and aiming for a higher score will significantly improve your chances, especially at these top-tier schools.

Strong Essays and Recommendations: Focus on crafting compelling essays that highlight your achievements, leadership potential, and why you're a good fit for each program. Secure strong recommendation letters that provide insight into your professional accomplishments and potential.

Networking: Connect with current students or alumni from these programs. Understanding the culture, values, and opportunities at each school will help you tailor your applications effectively.

Apply Early in Round 2: Given the competitive nature of these programs and your unique background, applying early in Round 2 will give you the best chance of securing a spot.

While your GMAT score is a component of your application, it's essential to present a holistic view of yourself through your essays, recommendations, and interviews. Focus on showcasing your strengths, achievements, and potential for future success.

Good luck with your applications!

We offer a limited number of complimentary profile evaluations each week . We match you with the students and alums of top B-Schools according to your background and target schools.
