A bit of a background. I’m a first year at college and My 10th marks were 89.8% and 12th marks were 82.5% (Covid Batch). On the other hand I’ve got excellent extracurriculars- National level sports, Completed all the levels of SIP Abacus, DELF A2 French certificate and ABRSM Grade 6 passed in a musical instrument.

I’m fairly confident that I’ll be able to get a good gmat score and all that. My only query is that whether or not I’ll be able to clear the first round because of my problematic low acads. Any advice would be appreciated.

I ll cut to the chase and answer in just one word - Yes! You have decent acads, just try to get a good gpa in grad as well and a competitive GMAT score. You'll be good to go.

In general for someone fresh out of college, Acads matter a lot. But you have to understand what do acads represent to the adcom at ISB/any other institution.

Acads are a way to showcase the fact that you are able to work hard and deliver results in a structured environment, consistently.

Given this perspective IF you are able to display the same trait through your extra curriculars ,mid-low academic scores should not be a hinderance.

Another reason for adcoms to consider your academic scores is to asses if you will be able to keep up with the rigorous and intellectually demanding course work at such schools. You can offset this through a good GMAT score (think 740 and above).

Essentially, look at your application as having different colored liquids, of different quantity in several beakers. (I am making up this analogy as I go).

You job is to mix and match every liquid in different beaker to come up with a color that Adcom likes. Trade-off, mix and match.

Think of larger questions:
Why MBA? Why Now? For eg
You could wait for another 3 years, get a sense of what exactly will a B-school give you once you pass out instead of applying right away?

Have good answers for these things and lower academic scores should get nullified. All the best.

You are in first year of college - focus on your grades there coz they'll be the most important part (from grades pov) in your application. Your 10th and 12th scores are decent enough. GMAT would be the key here and the activities you do at campus and outside of it.

You have a decent shot at ISB YLP especially since you already have enough awareness in your first year.

Try for a 750+ GMAT, you have sufficient time.

That definitely is my plan! I'll focus on the acads and have started preparing for the GMAT. Thank you for the advice!

Hello R0k,

At this point, do not worry about things that cannot be changed. Focus on your grades in college considering you are only in your first year. When it comes to YLP, your academics will have an impact and if you do well in college and have a solid GMAT score, we do not think the relatively lower scores in school will spoil your chances.

All the best!
