I am currently at a non-target and want to either get into IB or investment management. Therefore, I am aiming to get into a top notch MS Finance program if possible.

If u look at most of the finance class, you will realize the avg work experience is far lower than MBAs. So I guess we can conclude that WE helps you but is not absolutely necessary.

I think what is more important is ur career goals and your abilities in quant.

As a rule of thumb, finance masters degrees do not require work experience. However, having an at least 1 internship is a big plus.

The only Masters degree I know that requires min 2 years experience is Master in Finance at LBS, UK.

They do not *require* that you have work experience. But it will help you tremendously. So when they are selecting between someone with and without work experience, they will take the one with work experience even though their GMAT, GPA etc... are lower.

That said, if you are strong academically you still have a lot of chances.
