I know that in the case of the LSAT, admin officers typically like to see that the student has taken the LSAT only once. If you take it and cancel it immediately, the test appears as a cancellation on your official sheet.

I'm wondering if this is the case with the GMAT as well. If you take the GMAT but decide to cancel it before seeing your score, does it appear as a cancelled test or is there no record of your ever taking it?

I didn't think that it did, but I haven't researched it. Either way, I don't see it affecting your admissions decision anywhere.

YES, it does show. And there's no point in cancelling the score, either, or so I've been told. If you cancel your score, you'll never know how well you actually did, you'll have to make a whole other study session for the next GMAT you take, so you would have really just wasted months in preparation.

I agree - I can't think of a situation that you would want to cancel a score.
Most schools only use the highest score, so if you had let's say 450 (something really went wrong) and then re-took and got 650, nobody would care why you got 450 the month before.

I felt as though I was failing - GMAT is an adaptive test and you will constantly doubt your answers and doubt yourself during the test. Even if you are having a hard time finishing the test, it is still worth seeing your score - however tiny it may be :)
