Re: Does the position of a car driver’s seat have a significant impact on [#permalink]
Deconstruction of argument tell a clear story.

Argument starts with a question which is later answered in "YES". So yes, driver position is important for safety.
second statement tell you why. Driver's position affect comfort and ability to see the road.
Third statement onward tell you how comfort and how road visibility play role in drivers safety.

So second statement is not conclusion but it is premise on which conclusion is based.

Does the position of a car driver’s seat have a significant impact on driving safety? It probably does. Driving position affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly. A driver who is uncomfortable eventually becomes fatigued, which makes it difficult to concentrate on the road. Likewise, the better the visibility from the driver’s seat, the more aware the driver can be of road conditions and other vehicles.

Which one of the following most accurately describes the role played in the argument by the claim that driving position affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly?

(A) It is the conclusion drawn in the argument.

(B) It is a claim that the argument shows to be inconsistent with available evidence.

(C) It is used to provide a causal explanation for an observed phenomenon.

(D) It describes evidence that the argument ultimately refutes.

(E) It is a premise offered in support of the conclusion drawn in the argument.

Does the position of a car driver’s seat have a significant impact on driving safety? It probably does - This is conclusion of the argument.

Rest of statements in the argument is supporting the statement ( the position of a car driver's seat have a significant impact on driving safety). Therefore driving position affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly is the premise. So E is the correct answer.

When you look at the choices, only three choices come close - A, C and E

(A) It is the conclusion drawn in the argument.
You can fall for this, but what is It probably does. The conclusion is - It probably does

(B) It is a claim that the argument shows to be inconsistent with available evidence.
argument is based on this and never goes against it

(C) It is used to provide a causal explanation for an observed phenomenon.
It is NOt a causal explanation for some phenomenon, but it is more of a fact that supports or explains the conclusion

(D) It describes evidence that the argument ultimately refutes.
argument is based on this and never goes against it

(E) It is a premise offered in support of the conclusion drawn in the argument.
Correct

E

Hi chetan2u

What does "it" and "does" refer to in "It probably does"? I think it would be fair to assume that "it" refers to "car seat position" and "does" refers to "affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly". So the conclusion is : Car seat position probably affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly.
Wouldn't that make A correct ? Or the word "probably" in the conclusion is a deal breaker?

(E) It is a premise offered in support of the conclusion drawn in the argument.

In the argument, the claim that "driving position affects both comfort and the ability to see the road clearly" is used to provide support for the idea that the position of a car driver's seat has a significant impact on driving safety. This claim serves as one of the premises that build the argument's reasoning, ultimately leading to the conclusion that driving safety is impacted by the driver's seat position.
