Kindly help me on the SV agreement for the following sentences::
1: Either a slice of toast or eggs (is/are) what I will eat for breakfast. 2: This is one of those (Book / books) that (was/were) published last year.
Answers in my opinion:: 1: Either a slice of toast or eggs are what I will eat for breakfast --> Though "either/or" goes with a singular verb, but the second option is plural hence I chose the plural verb "are" 2: This is one of those books that was published last year --> Though "One of" goes with a singular verb, I'm not sure of my answer.
Please correct me with explanations !!!!

1: Either a slice of toast or eggs (is/are) what I will eat for breakfast. 2: This is one of those (Book / books) that (was/were) published last year. -'one' is a singular indefinite pronoun and so 'was' is correct; you have to use the plural 'books' because it makes no sense to say this is one of THOSE book
Rule: the singularity/plurality of a verb must match that of the closest noun whenever 'or' is the conjunction.
Thank you CEdward. Well, I found a rule, that would complement your suggestion. To add::
When two subjects connected by "or ,nor" are of different numbers, the plural subject should be written last and it should be followed by a plural verb.

Your both answers are correct with explainations.

So I looked at this again. Not sure where the sentence is from, but it should be:
This is one of the books that was published last year
Throwing the 'those' in there creates confusion, it's better written with the article 'the'. The emphasis should be on that one book that was singled out, not 'those' books that were published last year.
