I think (B)

1st split: S-V agreement
"Dr. Martin A. Tidball, along with colleagues at two universities," -> the verb must agree with subject "Dr. Martin A. Tidball", which is a singular noun -> A, D, and E are out

2nd split: parallelism
B. is working on uncovering the mysteries of glucose uptake, discovering new details about ATP transport, and enhancing facilitated diffusion via a drug
=> correct 3 paralleled actions in V-ing forms
C. is working to uncover the mysteries of glucose uptake, discover new details about active ATP transport, and enhancing facilitated diffusion with the help of a drug
=> parallelism errors

3rd split: meaning of "to work on"
To work on = to try hard to achieve and improve something. I think "to work on" is better than "to work to" in this context because "to work on" conveys the emphasis on the ongoing effort of Dr. Martin A. Tidball and colleagues are making. However, the first 2 splits are enough to arrive at (B).

First easy split: is/are: addictive phrases such as "along with", "accompanied by", "as well as" do not create compound subject (which requires plural verb) as does "and". So, options A, D, and E out.

Between B and C: B maintains parallelism while C does not. So B is correct answer.

'is' should be referred to Dr.Martin

So A,D,E are out
C- lacks the parallelism to uncover, discover, enhancing
B- without any of the above flaws

Dr. Martin A. Tidball, along with colleagues at two universities, is —> correct: are —> wrong. (Note that along with is an additive)

So, options A, D & E are out.

Between B & C, option B maintains parallelism (Uncovering, discovering & enhancing)

IMO Option B

The right answer is option B.

The subject of the sentence is Dr. Martin Tidball, which is singular, hence the verb has to be singular as well. However, options A, D, and E use the plural verb are instead of the singular verb is. We can therefore eliminate options A,D, and E.

Between B and C, there is a parallelism error in option C. The infinitive forms of the verbs to uncover and discover are not parallel to the gerund enhancing. We can therefore eliminate option C.

Option B is correct. Uncovering, discovering, and enhancing are rightly parallel.

Error: Subject verb error
Dr Martin along with his colleagues additive phrase should be singular. Options A, D and E eliminated

In between B and C if we look for parallelism C correctly emphasizes on working and enhancing.

IMO C

Competition Mode Question

Dr. Martin A. Tidball, along with colleagues at two universities, are working on uncovering the mysteries of glucose uptake, a discovery of new details about active ATP transport, and a drug to enhance facilitated diffusion.

A. are working on uncovering the mysteries of glucose uptake, a discovery of new details about active ATP transport, and a drug to enhance facilitated diffusion

B. is working on uncovering the mysteries of glucose uptake, discovering new details about ATP transport, and enhancing facilitated diffusion via a drug

C. is working to uncover the mysteries of glucose uptake, discover new details about active ATP transport, and enhancing facilitated diffusion with the help of a drug

D. are working hard to uncover the mysteries of glucose uptake, discover new details about active ATP transport, and enhance facilitated diffusion with the help of a drug

E. are working on uncovering the mysteries of glucose uptake, discovering new details about ATP transport, and enhancing facilitated diffusion via a drug

Official Explanation

There are two main problems with the original sentence.

(1) The subject (Dr. Martin A. Tidball) is singular and does not agree with the verb (are), which is plural.

(2) The three actions Dr. Tidball is working on are not listed in parallel form. The correct listing would have each action as a present participle: uncovering...discovering...enhancing

Note: You could also write the sentence in a parallel fashion with infinitives: is working hard to uncover the mysteries of glucose uptake, discover new details concerning active ATP transport, and enhance facilitated diffusion using a drug.

A. the subject (Dr. Martin A. Tidball, which is singular) does not agree with the verb (are, which is plural); the three actions Dr. Tidball is working on are not listed in parallel form (i.e., the phrase uncovering...a discovery...and a drug to enhance is not parallel)

B. the subject (Dr. Martin A. Tidball, which is singular) agrees with the verb (is, which is singular); the three actions Dr. Tidball is working on are listed in parallel form (i.e., the phrase uncovering...discovering...and enhancing is parallel)

C. the three actions Dr. Tidball is working on are not listed in parallel form (i.e., the phrase to uncover...[to] discover...and enhancing is not parallel)

D. the subject (Dr. Martin A. Tidball, which is singular) does not agree with the verb (are, which is plural)

E. the subject (Dr. Martin A. Tidball, which is singular) does not agree with the verb (are, which is plural)
