Re: During the last ten years, technological tools for educational purpose [#permalink]
During the last ten years, technological tools for educational purposes have seen considerable development, with many universities now offering an equal number of online courses as well as traditional classroom courses. However, access to online courses is usually limited to students living in urban areas who have access to high-speed internet facilities. Consequently, students living outside urban areas are unlikely to be able to access such courses. Nevertheless, universities are likely to continue to increase the number of online courses they offer, because ___________________.

Notes

last ten year, tech. improve
# online = # trad. courses
BUT online iff good internet
non-urban can’t access online
BUT university inc. # online anyway b/c ?

Analysis

The author’s first sentence is background information. He then dives into relaying to us that there is a disadvantage to online courses — it’s not equally accessible to non-urban kids! Despite that lack of accessibility, he believes universities will increase the online offering anyway. This is a Fill-in-the-Blank question. So let’s brainstorm why. Well, there’s many options.

1. Much of the non-urban population will move to the urban areas soon.
2. There are more urban-living students than rural students.
3. Demand for online is increasing.

Let’s see what we’ve got.

A. the number of students living in rural areas is likely to double in the next five years.
This answer minimizes the argument. This choice shows that if rural areas have bad internet access and that population will double, then the necessity for more online courses is kind of not that valid.

B. the number of students enrolling for regular classroom courses has been decreasing steadily.
Hm…so this tells us about the regular classroom course enrollment. This is one of those “opposing group” or Shell Game answers. It sounds great on the outside but just because we know the number of students for regular classrooms is declining has no bearing on what’s going on with online courses. All (B) tells us is that regular traditional courses may be a problem. It does not necessarily suggest that online courses are NOT a problem.

C. the education ministry is planning to launch a promotional campaign for online courses.
We might love promotional campaigns, but this answer is not that relevant. Does launching a promotional campaign explain an increase in online courses? Nope. This could explain a reason increasing online courses would work...but it doesn't strengthen the argument because it doesn't lead to the author's thought.

D. Demand for online courses is on the increase in urban areas.
Oh, hello! This explains why the universities would continue promoting online courses despite the low accessibility.

E. Most of the available online courses offer visual interaction with teachers through video-conferencing, a feature appreciated by many students.
Thanks for the additional information but this additional feature does not tell us WHY the increase might happen.
