1. According to the passage, e-cigarettes are highly addictive because:

A. Students feel safer when vaping and hence tend to smoke more.
B. Parental control and school intervention are less effective in controlling vaping.
C. Vaping devices have a higher concentration of nicotine than a regular cigarette.
D. Ease of access leads to a false sense of security causing them to continue smoking.
E. Vaping involves heating of nicotine as against burning of tobacco in regular cigarettes.

Answer C
Justification : Mentioned in 3rd para - "a higher concentration of nicotine in the vaping pods than found in regular cigarettes makes e-cigarettes much more addictive than the regular ones"

2. Which of the following makes vaping arguably not safer than smoking regular cigarettes?

A. Vaping allows lower concentrations of nicotine to enter the inhaler’s body.
B. E-cigarettes can help adult nicotine users quit smoking.
C. E-cigarettes cannot be sold to underage teenagers as per the federal laws.
D. Vaping may not always lead to a full-blown smoking addiction.
E. Little is known about the long-term dangers of e-cigarettes.

Refer 3rd para - Author is of the opinion that research is well documented for cigarettes but not for e-cigarettes

4. Which of the following cannot be said about e-cigarettes?

A. They are small enough to be smuggled undetected into the school.
B. They do not emit the odor of tobacco during vaping.
C. They are not as harmful as the regular tobacco cigarettes.
D. Many students would rather be expelled from school than give up e-cigarettes.
E. They are designed to provide the experience of smoking without many of the ensuing ill-effects.

I believe confusion will be between C and E
E will be eliminated because of the word "designed" , design aspect is true but further research is required to collaborate it. Hence C

Can someone pls explain to me the reasoning behind correct answer options for questions 3 and 4?

3. What is the main motive of the passage?

A. To describe how a recent phenomenon has become a rage among the young generation.
B. To argue that a new phenomenon is not necessarily worse off than a similar older one.
C. To draw a comparison between two similar phenomena.
D. To highlight a growing addiction in teens and cite reasons why the addiction could be problematic - CORRECT
E. To discuss the advantages of a recently developed phenomenon.

Why is D more appropriate than A? Is it because e-cigarettes is not a 'recent' phenomenon (stats quoted from 2011-2015)?
However, the 900% increase in usage among students IMO qualifies as a rage/trend - refer below snippet from passage.

Moreover, as the popularity and ease of availability of e-cigarettes rose, "vaping" turned into the most popular form of nicotine consumption among teenagers in U.S. high and middle schools: e-cigarette use increased by 900 percent among these students from 2011 to 2015.

Further, 'Highlight a growing addiction among teens' does not necessarily qualify as a good/bad addiction. While clearly the author feels it is problematic and more research needs to be done.

4. Which of the following cannot be said about e-cigarettes?

A. They are small enough to be smuggled undetected into the school.
B. They do not emit the odor of tobacco during vaping.
C. They are not as harmful as the regular tobacco cigarettes - CORRECT
D. Many students would rather be expelled from school than give up e-cigarettes.
E. They are designed to provide the experience of smoking without many of the ensuing ill-effects.

Why is C more apt than E? Both options have counters in the passage which qualify both statements as something that cannot be said about e-cigarettes - refer below snippets from the passages.

Option A: Additionally, there are several reasons to doubt the "safer" claim too.

Option E: The risks of cigarettes are well documented, but e cigarettes are too new for the researchers to comprehend their ill-effects, turning today's youth into a "guinea pig generation".

Official Explanation

3. What is the main motive of the passage?

Difficulty Level: 550

Explanation

From Passage Analysis, we know that the main point is: To highlight that e-cigarette smoking is a growing problem among school children and illustrate that it may be even more harmful than regular smoking.

(A) The passage discusses that vaping is popular among the young generation. But describing how is not the point of the passage.

(B) The passage does indicate that the risks associated with the new phenomenon, i.e., nicotine addiction due to e-cigarettes, are not known. So it may even be worse off than the similar older phenomenon, i.e., smoking regular cigarettes

(C) The passage does compare smoking regular cigarettes with vaping. However, that is not the complete intent. The passage goes on to talk about the negative effect of vaping on teenagers

(D) This choice is in line with our pre-thinking

(E) The passage does not intend to discuss the advantages of vaping or e-cigarettes

Answer: D

Official Explanation

4. Which of the following cannot be said about e-cigarettes?

Difficulty Level: 600-650

Explanation

We need to find an answer choice that cannot be inferred from the passage. As the question does not provide any clue as to where to look in the passage, we should go directly to options.

(A) Incorrect: This information can be inferred from the following line from the passage:

“…sleek enough to sneak into the school, and devoid of the telltale smoke and smell, vaping devices are being rampantly used by students in spite of all efforts by parents and teachers alike to stop their usage”

(B) Incorrect: This information can be inferred from the following line from the passage:

“…devoid of the telltale smoke and smell, vaping devices are being rampantly used by students in spite of all efforts by parents and teachers alike to stop their usage”

(C) Correct: The passage says that e-cigarettes may not be safer than regular cigarettes, i.e. they may be equally or even more harmful than regular cigarettes. Hence, this choice, which states the opposite, is the correct choice here.

(D) This information can be inferred from the following line from the passage:

“Disciplinary actions such as detention and expulsion have been unable to make the teenagers give up e-cigarettes.”

(E) Incorrect: From the passage we know that e-cigarettes cut down the smoke, smell, and cancer-causing tar produced by regular cigarettes. Hence, we can infer this choice from the passage and it is incorrect.
