Can someone pls explain to me the reasoning behind correct answer options for questions 3 and 4?
3. What is the main motive of the passage?A. To describe how a recent phenomenon has become a rage among the young generation.
B. To argue that a new phenomenon is not necessarily worse off than a similar older one.
C. To draw a comparison between two similar phenomena.
D. To highlight a growing addiction in teens and cite reasons why the addiction could be problematic - CORRECT
E. To discuss the advantages of a recently developed phenomenon.
Why is D more appropriate than A? Is it because e-cigarettes is not a 'recent' phenomenon (stats quoted from 2011-2015)?
However, the 900% increase in usage among students IMO qualifies as a rage/trend - refer below snippet from passage.
Moreover, as the popularity and ease of availability of e-cigarettes rose, "vaping" turned into the most popular form of nicotine consumption among teenagers in U.S. high and middle schools: e-cigarette use increased by 900 percent among these students from 2011 to 2015.Further, 'Highlight a growing addiction among teens' does not necessarily qualify as a good/bad addiction. While clearly the author feels it is problematic and more research needs to be done.
4. Which of the following cannot be said about e-cigarettes?A. They are small enough to be smuggled undetected into the school.
B. They do not emit the odor of tobacco during vaping.
C. They are not as harmful as the regular tobacco cigarettes - CORRECT
D. Many students would rather be expelled from school than give up e-cigarettes.
E. They are designed to provide the experience of smoking without many of the ensuing ill-effects.
Why is C more apt than E? Both options have counters in the passage which qualify both statements as something that cannot be said about e-cigarettes - refer below snippets from the passages.
Option A: Additionally, there are several reasons to doubt the "safer" claim too.Option E: The risks of cigarettes are well documented, but e cigarettes are too new for the researchers to comprehend their ill-effects, turning today's youth into a "guinea pig generation".
