Hi,

This is bothering me a lot.

I scored a 700 (Q49 V35 AWA4.5 IR 1) :) on my first attempt in June'16
As i wanted to improve my overall score and specially my IR score, i wrote it again after two months of preparation.

This time around i messed up the timing and scored a 680 (Q48 V35 AWA 5 IR 5) :? .

I wanted to apply in early action round to Duke-Fuqua.
My other target schools are ISB, Darden and Tepper.

Will a drop in score make my application weak (for the aforementioned schools) or they will only take the highest score and appreciate the improvement in AWA and IR section?
Do i need to address this in my optional essays?

Thank you!!

Only your top score will be used, and you cannot take part of one exam and part of another, so you would have to select the best overall score. That said, you don't have to worry about the drop. I do agree that you would be better of if you can raise your score, although don't focus on IR as the schools are not currently using it to evaluate applications.

Best,
Scott

Then should i apply to Fuqua in early action (with relatively higher acceptance rate) with that 700 or give GMAT one more try and apply in Round 1? As EA deadline is 13th September. Not much time left.

Hi Ashmish,

If you skip EA round and don’t get the desired GMAT score, you face a lower-acceptance round with 700, right?

Your GMAT score is close to the average, and if your GPA of 3.4 is more than its weight (means if your major was rigorous, your college was competitive, and your standing in the class was top-10 or so percent), then you’re competitive with your current score as well.

Sometimes, you've to take a call based on incomplete and uncertain information.

Generally schools will focus on your highest GMAT score, but if they have access to additional information like a lower score they can't un see that. I would recommend retaking just to maximize your chances and given you are still in study mode
