Hi,
I am applying for MSC SCM program at NTU and would like a response from a different set of eyes on the two essay for the application which is due to be submitted in this week
Posting the essay Question along with My response.
1- State (Please enter not more than 1000 characters; Do not use the symbol " & ~) why you wish to pursue this programme and how you would use the knowledge you gain from it in practice
Supply chain management, an elective course at BITS Pilani, which I thoroughly enjoyed during my junior year introduced me to one of the most hated events that planners across industries want to avoid at all costs i.e. a shortage of goods and services when consumers are willing to pay. It is critical for many industries such as transportation and healthcare where time is of the essence. Working with Indian railways, I observed on multiple occasions how a better procurement and inventory model could have diversified risks and fulfilled orders without delaying the operations. A proprietary database of indents and delivery periods can be used to train a model that can also factor in external factors such as delays and defects for better accuracy. The program at NTU is designed to learn how to deal with a wide spectrum of challenges and approach a holistic picture of a supply network starting with information transparency and traceability. Electives taught by Prof Piiplani provide building aspects of the digital arena for executing models successfully. The verified models can then respond to delays with updated delivery periods diversifying the risk pool from complex systems such as the above.
2- Briefly describe (Please enter no more than 1000 characters; Do not use the symbols " & ~) your most recent work/job assignments, if any, relating to the - programme you are applying for admission (Use a separate sheet of paper, if necessary). You may also indicate any research experience you may have or any paper(s) that you may have published over the last 5 years.- I don't have any research papers relevant to Supply chain so there is that
During my last six years at Indian railways, I have had several roles at Indian railways ranging from quality control to trial engineer for locomotives before their commission. I worked at a Locomotive production unit in close collaboration with senior officers as we transitioned from diesel to electric. The transformation involved buying new machinery and operating with greater precision to make faster and more cost-effective sub-components. I drove forward several modifications, identified gaps to drive operational efficiencies while adopting newer methods for assembling and movement of intermediate goods. While the material input costs were largely fixed, training costs were reduced by leveraging technology and by creating a multi-lingual repository of working instructions distributed on mobile devices. Faster adoption led to less downtime and following best practices across segments of procurement, planning and inventory management in the industry.
