Hello,

If a school does not specify in the prompt or on the FAQ section of the admissions website how long each application essay should be, how long is TOO long?

For a particular program, two essays are required. The first one is about 1.75 pages double spaced. The second essay is about 4 pages double spaced. Is this too much?

Hmmmm usually there's a limit listed somewhere (some times not in an obvious place and some times you'll only find it when you're inputting your essay into the online app).

To be safe, I'd keep essays at 500 words max.

I have never encountered essays without word limits. However, I would email to the adcom to clarify the requirements.

Double check and make sure you're not missing anything on the word limit if it is truly an essay with no word limit you want to stay around 500 words. Anything longer that can feel really long and may show bad judgement to the ad comm and an inability to be concise

Hello,
I would look again as most schools do give a word count limit. I would say most effective essays are 500 words or so. HBS essays tend to be about 900 words and they don't give a limit- but too much more than that and your run the risk of looking like you can't edit to what is important.
It might be worth a call to the school to clarify on this- to make sure you are clear what they prefer- as that matters most! Good luck!
