I have a question for experienced MBA applicants/students - I've read numerous times the importance of the 'theme' of your application, and making a coherent story throughout. Would it be considered acceptable in an essay to strengthen this by directly referencing an earlier essay? (i.e. "as mentioned in my previous essay/as mentioned earlier in my application" etc)
In one set of essays I'm writing I can make quite a cohesive link from one essay to the next and would like to emphasize this. I'm just concerned that perhaps essays should be considered 'stand-alone'. What do you all think?

Make every essay stand-alone. This is not a research paper and admissions officers do not have time to start cross referencing essays. The easier you make it for them to read, the more effective your application is going to be. Business school essays are not easy to write and they are not easy to read (especially given the volume that each admissions committee member is required to read) so keep it as simple and focused as possible. Your theme(s) can be effectively delivered without having to cross reference essays and ideas.
