I have a question for experienced MBA applicants/students - I've read numerous times the importance of the 'theme' of your application, and making a coherent story throughout. Would it be considered acceptable in an essay to strengthen this by directly referencing an earlier essay? (i.e. "as mentioned in my previous essay/as mentioned earlier in my application" etc)

In one set of essays I'm writing I can make quite a cohesive link from one essay to the next and would like to emphasize this. I'm just concerned that perhaps essays should be considered 'stand-alone'. What do you all think?

Well, it's not exactly that you need a theme (in the sense of a Broadway musical ;) ), but the idea is that you are apply to the MBA for a specific REASON (your specific goals), which makes sense for you based on your past experience and your skills and your desires).

Other than that in general, I recommend NOT to make explicit references like "refer to my essay x", because:
1. you never know in what order they will actually read your essays
2. they go through the applications relatively quickly, and they will not likely refer to it.

So if you feel something is important enough to show up more than once in your application (like your goals) then I suggest you repeat them briefly (and try to rewrite the phrase so it is not a word for word copy from another essay).

Hope this helps!
