Even though a few of the manuscripts found recently in southern Germany would seem to corroborate popular accounts of early-medieval migrations, the abundance of ambiguous sources seem more likely at the moment that they will prolong controversy over the patterns of migration rather than resolve them.

A. seem more likely at the moment that they will prolong controversy over the patterns of migration rather than --- abundance and seem are SV error

B. seem more likely that it will prolong controversy over the patterns of migration than ---- same as in A.

C. seems more likely to prolong controversy on the patterns of migration at the moment than---- The patterns of migration are past events. They are not happening at the moment. Therefore, they cannot be clubbed together as that will amount to misplaced word order.

D. seems more likely at the moment to prolong controversy over the patterns of migration than to – at the moment point to what the problem is on hand now. – Correct choice

E. seems more likely that it will prolong controversy on the patterns of migration at the moment than to--- the Same problem as in C.

But I am curious to know, what the pronoun ‘them’ in the non-underlined part is referring to? If it is referring to the patterns, can we accept that abundance of sources is trying to solve the patterns that occurred hundreds of years ago? What about the controversy? It is acceptable to say that the sources are trying to solve the controversy. However, the hitch is that controversy is not plural. Any ideas?

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

When we read this sentence, we are confused by "they." Who or what does this refer to? We don't know, which makes (A) a bad answer choice. More important than unclear terms is whether our other answer choices correctly use the idiomatic comparison "appear more likely to...than to...."
Choice (B) mistakenly uses "more likely that it will prolong" rather than "more likely to" as it should, and "will prolong" doesn't match "resolve."
Choice (C) starts out well, but the sentence isn't concerned with "patterns of migration at the moment," which is the result of misplaced additional details.
Choice (D) puts "at the moment" in a place where it's clearer and "to prolong" matches "to resolve."
Choice (E) makes the same mistakes as (B), save that its mismatched verbs are "will prolong" and "to resolve" instead.

The correct answer is Choice (D).
