Even if we use 'she', question still remains: who is that 'she'?

These kind of statements are usually used in reference to other statements in a big context; hence usage of 'her' is justified.

Hope this is clear. If so, give me kudos

Hi,

A. except Smith and she -> Correct
B. except Smith and her -> incorrect pronoun use
C. excepting Smith and she -> Gerund incorrectly used
D. but not she and Smith -> Awkward
E. outside of her and Smith -> Awkward

boomtangboy,
it has been multiple times discussed that 'except Smith and her' is correct but not 'except Smith and she'.

Even if you don't like, until you finish GMAT, accept it as a correct form.

Official Explanation

Since except is a preposition, it must take an object (her), not a subject (she). Therefore, choices (A) and (C) are wrong.

Choice (C) is also wrong because excepting is poor diction as used in this context, as a substitute for except.

In choice (E), outside of is also poor diction; either except or other than should be used instead.

In choice (D), “but not she and Smith” is wrong for the same reason as (A); when used as a preposition, but takes the object her.

The correct answer is (B).
