Every game of chess that Artem played this month resulted in a win, a loss, or a tie. What fraction of the chess games that Artem played this month did he win?
1.) The number of games that resulted in a tie was 1/4 the number of games that Artem won.
2.) Artem lost 2/5 of the games
(Have the answer, just need clearer understanding of explanation)
Any help appreciated peeps!
First you will be asked to follow the Posting rules -
https://gmatclub.com/forum/rules-for-posting-please-read-this-before-posting-133935.htmlAs far as solution is concerned :-
There are 3 variables - won, tie and losses and since you just need a fraction of won/total games you just need to know either w:l:t or the fractions of losses and ties to total.
Statement i) gives fraction of tie to total - You don't know about the number or the fraction of losses and hence you can not know the fraction for won
Statement ii) gives fraction of losses to total - You don't know about the number or the fraction of ties and hence you can not know the fraction for won
Combining you can do the following :- since you just want to know the fraction - Take LCM of 4 and 5 and thus consider 20 games were played out of which he lost 8 times and tied 5. Thus he must have won 7 of 20 games giving you a ratio of 7/20 for wins.
