What mistake is there with 'D'?
Compare (D) and (E). In choice (E), "those" refers to "the [automobile company's] earnings."

Were the company's earnings in the first quarter more than double the previous quarter? Or more than double the company's earnings the previous quarter?

(D) compares earnings to a quarter while (E) compares earnings during one time period to earnings during another time period. The latter makes more sense.

I hope that helps!

The question mark at the end makes this question a poor-quality question. It's a mistake and can throw off someone who doesn't recognise the mistake.

Hello fighting750,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, yes; replacing "of" with "in", Option E would still be correct.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
