Argument:
Following appeared in the article published in the newspaper.
“Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 years. Although one foreign company has copied the motorcycle and is selling it for less, the company has failed to attract motorcycle X customers - some say because its products lacks the exceptionally loud noise made by motorcycle X. But there must be some other explanation. After all, foreign cars tend to be quieter than similar American-made cars, but they sell at least as well. Also, television advertisements for motorcycle X highlight its durability and sleek lines, not its noisiness and the ads typically have voice-overs or rock music rather than engine roar on the sound track.”
RESPONSE:
In the recently published newspaper, an article in the business section talks about Motorcycle X. The author states that Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 Years and provides an instance when a foreign company that copied the motorcycle, has failed to attract motorcycle X customers, evidenced by less sales. The reasons stated by some is that the product lacks exceptionally loud noise made by motorcycle X. The author does not agree with this line of reasoning and so quotes an example, of foreign cars selling more than american cars, despite producing lesser noise. The author then goes on to provide examples of Television Ads for motorcycle X that stress on Durability and Sleek lines and not its noise. The line of reasoning used by the author has certain flaws. The author seems to have drawn a conclusion that some other factor is responsible for the popularity of Motorcycle X based on inconclusive evidence.
Firstly, the author fails to consider the significance of choice of certain demographic that purchases motorcycle X for a certain reason, namely loud Noise. It is possible that some people or maybe more prefer Motorcycle X for its Loud Noise, contributing to the entire style quotient and overall swagger. The author fails to address the importance of the fact that every individual might have a unique reason for purchasing Motorcycle X. Instead, the author tries to re-enforce his opinion that loud noise cannot be a factor by describing the Television ads and the durability and sleek lines of Motorcycle X. The Author's opinion is not reflective of the entire section of people that purchase Motorcycle X.
Secondly, the argument is flawed as it is based on a comparison between a foreign company that copied motorcycle X and a foreign company that manufactures cars. The comparison is inapropriate as it undermines the basic tenet of the two modes of transportation. A car cannot be compared to a motorcycle. Also, the customers that cater to a Car have entirely different reasons to the people who prefer motorcycles. The author weakens the argument by making an illogical comparison in order to substantiate his point.
The article can be made worth its gold if it is provided with relevant and supportive evidences that specify the reasons as a whole why people prefer motorcycle X and not its foreign counterpart. The author would be in a better position to draw the conclusion that motorcycle X is preferred for some reason other than noise if evidence substantiating his claim are provided. A more comprehensive and cohesive approach to the study of demographs will surely strengthen the argument.
As it stands, however, the arugment is flawed for the reasons indicated above. The article would make for a good read if you are not paying much attention to the details.
