Occasional lurker here. I have a question that's been troubling me for a while now and finally made an account hoping to find good answers.
JamesDFitz, thanks for your question. I do have 15 yrs on the admission committee side and I can say this about convictions. First, if a school says expunged info does not have to be included then don't include. If you have a question about a particular program, you can always call and ask (of course this runs the risk of exposure- you could get a friend to ask anonymously for you to get the info. then if they want to see all prior convictions I would offer it. ) And here's what worked with me... I wanted to see the person express some kind of remorse, awareness that they learned from experience. From there, I would state this info has been expunged and I would emphasize why it would never happen again. That's it. Don't say too much- but do admit you recognize this as a big mistake and that you learned from it. end of story. I did not like when people did not at least try to express some remorse or growth from experience- especially as you say with the 2 convictions. I would not say it is not a big deal - as you could have killed someone in your recklessness- so you need to be appropriately expressing that you recognize it was not good behavior but that you have learned from it and it will not be an issue going forward. Remind them it will be expunged whenever that is. So admit it, show growth, move on. As long as everything else is good in your application, it is doubtful it will be an issue. However, if the school does not require expunged info I would not add it as it is not really something that adds to your overall application- but you do need to have integrity and follow the rules for each school on whether or not this needs to be reported. Good luck and I do hope you have learned why this was not a wise choice. Best wishes to you.
I scored 770 on the GMAT, have a unique work experience, some community work, and am an international student from an under-represented country. However, I have two misdemeanor DUI convictions from when I was 21 and 23 years old. I am turning 28 later this year, have not gotten into any other run in with the law, and will have both DUIs expunged within the next couple of weeks or so. While some schools like Booth explicitly states that applicants do not have to answer "yes" if the conviction(s) have been expunged, other schools do not say so. Is it in my best interest to answer "no" to every conviction question or should I answer "yes" to schools that do state that I can answer "no" if the conviction(s) have been expunged? Will expunged records show up on the background check later on? Not sure what my best move is, since if expunged records do not show up on background checks then I should not bring up something that happened while I was in college/fresh out of college. I think it's harder to play it off as a mistake when I had two convictions.

Does anyone have any experience regarding issues like this?
