"-ing" words can function as good old-fashioned nouns. For instance, Tim can enjoy chocolate and swimming. (Just not usually at the same time.) Both "chocolate" and "swimming" are nouns here, and that's fine.
Same deal in (A). "Compensating" and "claims" both function as nouns, so they're parallel.
