IMO B

A poem by Mallarm, which was begun in 1865, the final version of which appeared in 1876, was the inspiration for Debussy s “Afternoon of a Faun.”

A)1865, the final version of which appeared - "which" throws me of here. It is not clear what which is modifying.. 1865 or the poem.

B)1865 and appeared in final version - parallel structures. Which was began and which appeared. Both modifying the poem.

C)1865 and it appeared in final version - parallelism is at fault here. Also, we have IC as modifier.

D)1865, whose final version had appeared - no need for past perfect tense.

E)1865, its final version making its appearance - change in verb tense. Using two pronouns with in a single clause is redundant and not correct

Let's look inside the two commas:

It is not parallel:

Correct Version Should be: which was begun and which was appeared
OR
which was begun and appeared

Not Was begun and Was appeared is correct because this sentence is in Passive voice
If in Active Voice: it would be: which begun and appeared




A)1865, the final version of which appeared Incorrect Answer Explain Above

B)1865 and appeared in final version Correct Parallelism

C)1865 and it appeared in final version Which was begun and it appeared: Incorrect Parallelism and 'it' pronoun refer to poem or mallarm...Incorrect Answer

D)1865, whose final version had appeared Which begun and Whose had appeared..... Incorrect parallelism and usage of past perfect is wrong. We use past perfect for the sequence of events in past.

E)1865, its final version making its appearance First there is no parallelism, second its pronoun is use for poem or mallarm,and third its pronoun is a possessive pronoun and it is used for possessive noun and here there is no possessive noun. Hence Incorrect Choice

correct

"it" referring back to?? same as A,incorrect

use of "had" is wrong as it's an action happened later.incorrect

"its" ?? same error as A

This is like matrix - which within a which clause. It is not clear what the second "which" refers to. Sentence is also awkwardly consutructed. Incorrect.

B)1865 and appeared in final version
Correct.

C)1865 and it appeared in final version
"it" changes the structure of the sentence. Incorrect.

D)1865, whose final version had appeared
whose is incorrect. We are referring to a poem, not a person.

E)1865, its final version making its appearance
"its" changes the sentence structure.

Hi,
It is the only option where verbs are parallel and meaning is right.


we already know the main sentence.
A poem by Mallarm was the inspiration for D's "Afternoon of a Faun".
Which was begun in 1865 and the final version of which appeared should modify A poem by Mallarm.

option A,
the final version is trying to modify 1865- wrong
option A has bunch of modifiers following one another, but they should be connected and modify the same thing.


Option B,
A poem by mallarm, which was begun in 1865 and appeared in final version in 1876.
Parallel verbs Was begun || was appeared
this sentence can be broken down to

A poem by Mallaram was begun in 1865
AND

A poem by Mallaram appeared in final version in 1876.

And now this makes sense too.
A poem by M , <modifier>, was the inspiration for Debussy s “Afternoon of a Faun.”
