Hi everyone,

I recently joined this forum and needless to say found it extemely useful for my GMAT prep.
I am taking my GMAT on 6th of August...but the practice scores are horrendous...to say the least. I am scoring good in quant but accuracy is as low as 50% in verbal.
I am terribly in need of some advice to jack up my scores..pls help..

you should give us more information as we know nothing about why you have a problem in verbal. what exactly do you do in your prep. how do you get to an answer in verbal. is it random, is it just process of elimination ? have you worked on your errors? is there a pattern?

Be as specific as possible. The more info. you provide, the better. Also, read through the posts in this forum. you might find useful information.

Hi

thanks for ur concern... I am sorry for being so unclear at first.

I am facing following difficulties in each of the verbal sections :

Reading comprehension : I lose track of what is being said in the passge. The language seems too convoluted. The sentences are lenghty in structure...I lose track completely. Sometimes I am just reading thru the whole comp. without getting a word. Also, max of my time goes in RC questions...and max wrong also are in this section. It seems the fear of RC has settled so much in that moment I see one...there is block. Moreover I tend to forget where to look for specific detail in the comprehension. All this seems like I haven done anything in RC... but I have . If I try with slow speed and read the passage when not reading for answering the question I retain much more.

Critical reasoning : I am unable to break up the argument in evidence and conclusion sometimes. I get lost in the choices and then all seem correct. Another problem is typically getting stuck between 2 options and ultimately marking the wrong one.

Sentence correction : Every sentence it seems brings in some new grammer rule. basic ones..I am aware of like subject verb agreement, parallelism etc. But I dont know all the idioms that are often tested.

I hope I have been more specific here. If you can help me with the above..I will be very grateful..
Thanks in advance

hello...

RC: ur problem - reading fast does not help U with the understanding of the passage or the message... suggestion: read a bit slow AND DO NOT try TO GET MEANING OF EACH AND EVERY SENTENCE OF THE Passage IT Only makes u loose the concentration n also ur focus .

also try reading the first sentence or the first two sentences of the passage well so that U would know what the author is intending to convey...

the last para will be as important 'cos it will give an idea of what the author feelz most about the passage also what could be the conclusion about the passage...since U have very less time I cannot suggest U more for it will only make things worse...

cr: always what ever goes like '' therefore , and so , finally , hence , to conlcude '' will be the conclusive statement of the argument and whatever else in the argument will constitue the premise or the reasons supporting the conlcusion . in most cases any anz choice that is out of the 'scope' of the argument is certainly not the ans... why - bcos U have to CRITICALLY evaluate the given argument... be very narrow in ur thinking in the sense ..ur mind should ask only for that choice that refers only to the given argument and also relates to both the conclusion and the premise...that may sometimes be logically unsound but that is cr...

SC: the basics matter more than most other things...never mind the more U learn the more newer concepts U will be found wanting In.stick to the rules and be very analytical and give a ''smart'' approach rather than a laborious one.

take it easy a day before the TEST ...think of the best things and feel positive and let me know how U went about the exam...it would help me and a lot of guys here... have fun :)

bye
