I believe that at the Top 10 it will stay pretty much the same. Just some minor changes, US News is not as volatile as BWeek.
For those arguing that Finance schools will take a hit, if so, MIT/K could close the gap to Wharton and move ahead of Chicago, NYU and Columbia would also fall - something I don't believe that will happen this year.
I agree this year we wont see the impact this year since they will be using stuff from last spring before it all went down. I think it might play a factor in rankings next year, but you have to imagine that "finance" schools are being very proactive these days. I know here, they have not only been pretty upfront with students about the reality, and the need for plan A, B, C, D, and E, but also going out and working with recruiters to increase the hiring where possible and to ensure that they do take students.
Its painfully obvious that things have changed and where many students went to work out of those schools in the past aren't hiring like they did just 12 months ago. I know our placement at the big banks for internship as of now (still people on WL's) is about 40% of the historical numbers...this doesnt factor Lehman who was a big hiring company at all the top schools (10 last year) but obviously is no longer hiring at all. The bigger question is how will students who attended these schools with that dream deal with it, will they seamlessly shift into another career path or stubbornly stick it out and fail to land that type of job. In USnews, the opinion polls are what will play into the rankings...will the new job market dynamics affect how peer schools and recruiters rank schools?
I think in BW rankings the x-factor will be how students obtaining their dream or not impacts the student survey portion...You better believe that some people will blame the school for them not making the cut since they cant stomach the idea of thinking it was them. This might come across much more at schools where their is a greater sense of entitlement due to the brand. Not to knock a school but seriously how do you think HBS kids who thought they should have gotten into a HF/PE/VC but got stuck at a mid-market IB's are going to view the school that was supposed to give them the biggest advantages in the world.
Honestly, it doesnt really mean a whole lot...USnews will have the same schools in roughly the same order. Movements will be limited to a spot or two and no one will freak out if they go from 4 to 5 or 7 to 8. I dont think we will see a crazy drop like Yale in BW's rankings. These companies have to change their rankings somewhat each year to justify having rankings, but in reality the positions of schools are no where near as volatile as rankings lead people to believe. If you go to H/S/W/K/C/MIT then you are going to be entering and graduating from a top 5 school so dont worry about it. Look if the companies you want to work for recruit at your school heavily since to me thats far more telling than what a magazine says about your school.
